This is a photo of my great grandfather from the Boer War. It was taken in 1899. Do any of you fine gentlemen know what regiment this would have been?
I believe from the limited knowledge I have that it is a Lee-Enfield 303 Mark I rifle, can someone confirm.
Thanks very much and enjoy.

With a little more info it would be easier to determine. i.e his Name, place of enlistment and where the photo was taken in 1899.
either PM or post some info and I'll see what I can find for you.

Thanks for the response.

I believe that the photo was taken in South Africa, only because it says on the back "Trooper George Douglas MacDuff N0. 37646"
My cousin was able to find out the photo was called "The Scottish Field Horse" South Africa March 1902.
I will see what other info I can get.

Thanks

My Great uncle was with the Canadian's in the Boer war when he was 17. Where he took a Mauser bullet to the shoulder. Returned home to work on the CP railroad. Was recalled too duty when the first world war broke out. He was Mustard gassed twice and took a schrapnel wound too the leg.The round also killed his horse. After the war he again returned home to work for CP. First day at work slid off rear boxcar and took his right leg off at the knee. We really don't know how lucky we are these days.

We are pretty lucky these days, just with how simple life is now.
Wasn't Sam Steele in The Yukon and when he finished up there he headed to South Africa, I think he was the first commanding officer of Lord Strathcona's Horse. What a trip, The Yukon to South Africa. We could fly from Whitehorse to Germany in 8hours now.

The world has indeed became eerily small!

I know a South African guy whose grandfather fought in the Boer War (Nagel, I think), but ended up staying to marry a Boer girl :) . Apparently he had automatic Canadian citizenship because his grandfather was a Canadian.

The Cavalry regiment, The Royal Canadian Dragoons were there as well, that is where they got the Springbok for their cap badge which they still wear today.

The Rifle

Your great-grandfather is wielding one of the following rifles; 1894 Lee-Metford or an 1896 L.E.1. The rifles are .303 British. Mine is an 1896 L.E.1 with bayonet.

looks like mounted infantry MI but its hard to say
if you have is service number you should be able to get info from
the dept of veterans affairs including his old service record
