I am planning to buy my son his first rifle for X-mas. he is with the army Cadets and he is a very good shooter. My budget is in the $100.00 to $150.00 range. For that price I see a lot of brand new semi-Auto but the only bolt action I saw are Norincos and they are all out of stock ! :-(
If anyone see some on special, can you please let me know where ?

Any help will be appreciated !

if he is a very good shooter please buy him the Norinco ns522. I realize its a bit above your budget however, good shooters are often discouraged when they shoot guns that are not accurate, and can loose interest quickly. It is worth it to your son to have the most accurate rifle you can buy him. If you are not afraid to buy used, put a want ad in the EE for an older CIL that was made by anschutz. They used the 64 action, which is no slouch. I have seen them sell for $150. Maybe you might get lucky, and you will have a great little rifle for your son. Good luck and GREAT GIFT

With a feedback score of 161 . . . and the price range suggested . . . for a youth who is a good shooter . . . Yeah . . . Right!
It would probably be interesting to see what he wants.
Is it reasonable to assume you want to get something he will cherish for the rest of his life?
Being in the cadets does he aspire to be an infantry man or long range marksman.
With a score of 161 what does he prefer that is harboured in your stable?
My son always had designs on my Remington 700 30-06 which he was given complete with scope after it was rebarreled.
He fell in love with the scoped Browning T-Bolt and he has that plus the Remington 870.
I have never encouraged wives to buy firearms, scopes, knives or binoculars for their husbands without a shopping list he compiled.
The same applies to guys buying a rifle for their "girl friend" and now dad's buying a gun for their sons or daughters.
Save up to get quality, something he will want and enjoy, and cherish with the fondness of memories.

A brown one is fetching the bottom of the bucket.
Old Winchester singles may be had for this budget.
I'm thinking the Model 67-68's and the rare occasion one can trip
over the 69 & 69A's.

$100-150 doesn't leave too many options for brand new. You're probably looking at Norinco or Stevens for that price. Marlin XT22 can be had around $200 if there's wiggle room in that budget, if not I'd peruse the used ads. Should be able to round up a decent Cooey, Winchester, Lakefield or some such for $150 or less.

I have seen Lakefield Mk2 on EE many times for under $150. I grabbed one for $120 a couple of months ago, very nice condition, seems fairly accurate.
I would get an NS522 if I had room for more .22s. Probably should anyway...

PM me your emt address and I'll send you 50 bucks to help out a fellow Army Cadet. Maybe we all get together and stop bugging the man about his budget and help out a young man at Christmas. At least he's following our path.

For some of you I might sound cheap. but I was just put " Off work" on sick leave by my physician, and short term insurance has not kicked in yet ! Some might have noticed that some of my own guns are presently for sale in the EE sections. Also I always buy my kids more than one gift. Having two kids and limited income at this time explains the lack of funds for a more expensive rifle . i am no cheap bast**d I am just in a bad situation at the moment and trying to do the most with the least.

Don't apologize. We all have different budgets. I don't like to spend any more than I have to on what I buy and there are lots of 22's out there used for $150 that will fit your needs.
As stated before if you can stretch it to $200+ tax the NS 522 will give you a brand new gun that has a hammer forged barrel and very easy to adjust/modify trigger. The stock is functional but could benefit from some lovin.
Scott...

I see used bolt action, tube magazine Marlin 81's for sale, usually under $125.

They will shoot .22 shorts, longs and long rifles.

Mine was an 81DL with the peep sight. It was a great shooter. It would have to be drilled and tapped to put a scope on it.

It was my dad's and I loved that old rifle. It was the only gun I had for a couple of years and I took it everywhere we went.

Your son will remember the rifle and the lessons he learned from you as he gets older. Not how much you paid for it.

I will match millwright's offer to your son Pre-1898, pm me your emt addy. So, there's $100 towards your son's rifle. I am of the opinion that you should buy him the NS522 because it is accuracy he is after...

I did notice that CanadaAmmo ended the sale & the NS522 is no longer $199, it's back to $249... But, maybe CanAm will see this thread and give you a 'one time' break on the price? If not, I am sure that other upstanding CGN members will step in to help out. You'll need a set of rings & a scope to...

Let's see what happens!

Cheers
Jay
