My friend asked me what I would suggest to get his girlfriend, she wants a .22lr for xmas.

Personally, id spring for a cz 452 lux if i could find one, but he's budgeted to around 500, and wants one with iron sights, that could probably have a scope mounted on it.

can anyone recommend me something to show him?

open to blued, wood, synthetic etc.

I bought a Savage Mk II G last spring, I am verry happy with it, the Accu-trigger is nice. I put a Simmons scope on it, altogether I'd say about $ 300.

because its not my money to spend, he works a relatively low paying job and was willing to go 500... if he can get a good gun and save money, why not go that route?

Zastava Z5.
Comes with great sights and is groved for a scope. All steel construction, wood stock.Fully adjustable trigger. Mine is set at 3 lbs and works great. They shoot great too. My girlfriend loves shooting the one we have.
You can pick one up at Gagnons in oshawa for $270.

Well, I'm the first to suggest Savage...but if he's looking to fill that $500 budget..a CZ would be a great choice. Seeing as it's for a "girl", he might consider the CZ scout. I know most women who shoot guns off hand comment (complain?) about how heavy they are. If it's going to be a range gun/off a rest, anything goes. If it's a casual target shooter/plinker that will be carried or shot offhand, something smaller like a scout would be a good choice if she a "slight" thing.

On a side note..and if he is strapped for cash, CZs (in my experience) don't shoot any better than Savages, but cost almost twice as much. A CZ is a nicer "gift" gun I suppose, but will that extra, perceived value really matter to someone new to shooting? I once gave a ring (I couldn't afford) to a girlfriend thinking I was a real romantic...the relationship ended a few weeks later. No, she didn't return the ring. So yeah...suggest he get a Savage.. :)

I'm not thrilled with the stock on the Savage MkII.
I don't find the gun comfortable to shoot.
I suggest trying some different guns out and see what feels good.

I had a Savage MKII F and it was a fine rifle. It was a great loaner rifle and everyone who used it liked it in every way. Marlin makes a helluva nice rifle too in the 925. The 925 is scaled down a bit, so it might suit the lady more. I find women like wood stocks more and they seem to have a better eye for quality.
