Bolt Action 250-3000

I built one many years ago on a '96 action. Used one of Brownell's pre threaded/chambered short barrels. Still have it, but dont use it much, sorta saving it for when the grandkids start to hunt with me. We already go shooting together, but haven't introduced them to centerfires yet.

I plan on ordering a pre-threaded and chambered Shilen barrel in .250-3000 for my Savage short-action as soon as I can save enough dough. That way, I can switch between .223 and .250 depending on what I'm after. Just about any short-action would work well, especially if it was previously chambered for .22-250. No magazine mods to worry about.

I have built two 250-3000 Ackley Imps.

The first was on a Rem 600, more than thirty years ago for my wife's sheep rifle. An experiment, it weighed just a tad less than six pounds with 22 inch barrel and the little 4X scope that Redfield made for 22 rifles. Remember this was the late seventies, and nobody had a rifle within a pound of that. She shot her first Dall ram with the rifle.

The next was on a SAKO, about ten years later, and weighed a pound more with a similar barrel and a Leupold 2-7X.

I'm sure either action would be fine for the standard 250, and the weight should be near the same.

The .250-3000 is just a .250 Savage. Any .308 size action will do. It's only 103 thou shorter than a .308 case. Same case head dimension.

To save major feeding problems ie: changing from .243 etc.......simply get a 22-250 and all you need to change is the barrel.A cheap Sav 110 will suffice.I have a 700 Classic in .250 and it's a deer killer for both me and my boys .Everything one shot DOA .My only problem is getting it back from the kids each fall...............Harold
