Bolt action .450 Marlin?

Does anyone have a bolt action rifle in .450 Marlin? I wonder what the performance would be like in a light and handy bolt action. It could take much higher pressure than an 1895. Maybe a Model 7 with a 19" barrel, lightweight synthetic stock, barrel band, good open sights, quick detach mounts and a Leupold fixed 2.5x scope. I figure it would be around 6.5 pounds scoped. Or with a nice walnut stock it would be a mini safari type rifle.


Just thinking out loud, that's all.
 
Folks have been "Cutting" down the 458 Win Mag for Years;)
458 American I think ? or the 458x2" ?
Not all that different from the 450 Marlin :cool:
 
It would be slightly less effective than a Ruger #1 in 45/70, or Siameze Mauser in 45/70.(Smaller case)

Pointy can also be used in the Ruger or Mauser too.
I don't have any experience with the 450 but I know my 45-70 Mauser runs out of case volume, I believe the 450 is smaller again, I would think getting enough powder in it would be a serious hinderance :confused:
 
In 2001,you could order from Winchester Custom Shop,a MODEL 70 IN 450.Marlin.Any Short Mag would just have to b re-barelled/chambered as head dia.of bolt would work.Cabella's had one 4 sale,but c it is gone now.
To gain more powder capacity I cut a 300RUM to 2.1"(45/70+450 length) necked to .458 and re-chambered a 450MR. When/if I do a bolt I would use same case at 2.25",to give a longer neck.In a 7 1/4 lb lever,2.1 is enough!!!:
 
I have a Mauser chambered in 458 Win Mag (actually 458 WM "Improved"). Other than bolt face and a bit of feed rail work, it was as simple as re-barrelling.

Standard brass, cheap dies, lots of load data, more than enough oomph!

The UM's have no belt. Does this leave you enough of a shoulder for consistent positive headspacing?

There would be enough - sounds like a description for a short "450 Vincent Short" which is based on the RUM (404 Jeffrey) case.

I have one in a blr.I shoot 300-350grain barnes x.with the 300g I get just under 2200fps& 1'' groups.a friend shot a whitetail with it on the weekend it drops in its tracks.I have it 1.5'' high at 100yards,he shot that deer at 158yards amed at its back and almost shot over it .It didn't drop hardly at all.very practical rifle with lever & a clip. robin

It's a bit of a long story, but I have an odd-ball round that is a 458 WM that has had the body blown out so that it has a 0.509" shoulder and a 0.650" neck. It started out as a 458/350 Rem Mag Improved and I ran a 458 Win Mag reamer into it to bring it to 2.500" cartridge length. Worked out nice - use 458 WM brass, no trimming needed. I neck size with 45 Colt sizing dies.

Gives it about 3% more capacity than the 458 WM (95.0 grs of H2O), and plenty of neck bearing surface on long bullets. That's about as much as you can get from the 458 WM. Max OAL is about 3.250" so works wonderfully in a Mauser action with very little mag alterations, and no receiver metal removed to compromise its strength.

If I was doing it from scratch, I'd do something close to the 450 Vincent Short. Keep cartridge length to no more than 2.65" and cartridge OAL to 3.40". That would allow use of 300 RUM brass, keep mag mods to a minimum, and avoid removal of metal from behind the bottom bolt lug recess.

That having been said, 458 WM is more than enough gun for anything I'm likely to hunt.
 
I had a custom 458x2" some years ago, it would be about the same, a 400gr @ 2100fps. A great close cover bear/moose rifle.
