bolt action drop out mag or hinged floor plate ?

Either-or.No matter to me I will use either.Neither has helped nor hindered me in any way to sway me on what one is better. My ony prob with a drop mag is some are cheaply constucted.

Mags can go missing too easily.

Floorplates can pop open unexpectedly.

In my opinion a blind magazine is optimum. Sure, some guys will decry having to cycle all the ammo out of the mag using the bolt, but that's really not such a huge deal. I hate dropping the damned things on the ground, in the snow, and having to fish them out. No chance of ammo ending up somewhere it shouldn't with a blind mag. With a push feed action you can usually press the last round in the mag down enough to close the action on an empty chamber, or drop a round into the chamber and close the action over a full magazine. Not possible with a Mauser action unless you've had work done to the extractor to allow it to jump over the cartridge rim.

And for the record I have blind mags, A-Bolt style, floorplate style and single shot rifles of three styles. It all boils down to preference really. And what hype you want to buy into.

You must love tube mags then?

So far about the only thing I don't have one of...yet.

To be realistic, everything can break or bugger up. If one system was way worse than the others it would have died out by now.

Had a hinged floorplate magazine in my rem.700 bdl.Missed the buck of a life time due to the bullets not cycleing into the chamber, not just once but twice.
Finally fed a round into the chamber via my thumb and managed to squeeze off a running shot. The two previous clicks I had him lined up on the white throat patch. The year was 1987 soon after I put a quick clip conversion in
and never had a problem since.Although i have not seen a buck of that caliber either. So i am a big fan of the clip!

Why not focus on the rifle that you would like to buy and whatever type of mechanism it comes with, so be it.
Then after a while,if you don't like it, you get to buy another rifle:D

I prefer the clip, my freind uses a Win 70 with a floor plate and he always complain that every time you whant to unload completly its a pain. We drive to our hunting site and some time we will get to use the car during the day so I like my clip because its easy to unload. Plus at the range I save some time using a clip.

I enjoy the utility (and relative security) of my Browning A-Bolt's attached, yet detachable magazine the most. My second choice would be a drop free style.

Right now, i would bet that you wished that you had never asked that question, as you have had sssssoooo many replies and, right now, you are still undecided :D

My first rifle was a Browning A-Bolt in .270 cal.with the hinged floor plate with the detachable magazine.
After a while, i hated it as it was a 3 stage operation (release floorplate, attatch mag. and then swing into place)

Then i bought another rifle with a hinged floorplate, again, after a while i got fed up with that operation also, as every time i got into the truck or in a situation of safety that required me to empty the rifle, it was a bit of a pain, (but not a big deal) to cycle the ammo out of the rifle.

Then, i bought another rifle (gotta love it):) a Tikka Hunter with a detachable magazine, and , i must say that i just love it. For me, it is the most convenient system, BUT, once again>>>>>>>THAT is for you to try and find out for yourself:) :) :)

DBMs rule, load one mag. with hunting rounds and the other with silver bullets. If a werewolf takes a run at you, you're only a simple mag. change from salvation.

Mag or clip

The proper way to proceed is to buy at least one of each. Even if you have to sell your furniture. Then you will know what is right for you. Think of the fun you'll have!

WOW I did not expect that type of reaction but am pleased at the resoning for everyone,s opinion. I was just trying to weigh in the pros and cons because many models lately are offering both.
Thanks again Gunnutz for good answers and entertainment in the process !!

Finally! An answer that makes sense. Even better my furniture is owned by the Federal Government so I don't care if I sell it or not. Good idea!

Welcome to Gunnutz Jon. Ask an opinion and this is what you'll get, 11 times out of 10!:D

Now start a bear defence thread and really get us going!

Does that mean type of gun that is best
Would you be better with a rifle with iron sights or a shotgun ?
If so, what ammo would you recommend for the rifle/shotgun

I use both mag fed and swing out floor plate. I guess I prefer the floor plate style. Yes, you don't have to worry about losing the magazines but mostly it is something that I don't have to remember to pack. I usually keep 10 rounds in a sleeve on the stock, so I always have one 'at the ready' while road hunting to a spot and have somewhere to put the ammo when I unload.

Personal preference. If it works for you, go with it.
