A friend is looking for a bolt action Mauser 16ga shotgun. I've never heard of such an animal. Anyone have references on these?

Apparently they where WW2 converted surplus Mausers.

Frank de Haas mentions them in his old book on bolt action rifles, and shows a few pictures, and I know there were mentioned a few times in the milsurp section on this board.

So you might want to ask this question there also.

After they lost the First World War the Germans were prohibited from manufacturing/selling military arms. To utilize the vast quanties of Mauser rifles in storage, somebody got the bright idea of converting them into shotguns, which would be perfectly legal.

After WWI, germany made up some shotguns using left over military Mausers. modified the bolt to feed and extract shotshells. bolt mod included removing one of the locking lugs. adding the shotgun barrel. the magazine would hold two shells. What you have was originally a Mauser military rifle that was converted to a shotgun

The unsafe idea, I believe comes from speculation that if you remove a locking lug the gun is less safe firing something like 12 gauge. Also it is possible to fire the shotgun with the 12 gauge removable bolt face not in place, which would cause excessive head space(about 1/8 in.) which might be a big problem. There is a discussion on this and some pictures of the bolt face at www.homegunsmith.com goto "ask a GURU" then on page 2 "MAUSER 98 12 GA". In my opinion if it is over $100 and you are looking for a shooter not a collecter to fill a spot in a collection of Mausers, I would look for a used Mossberg 500 pump , or even some of the Savage bolt action Shotguns over this conversion. I have an old beat up one and although it may not be representative of them all , it is not the smoothest repeater around. If it is real cheap, in reasonable condition and the large removable bolt face is not missing, it would be a servicable barn gun.

I've got one. My dad picked it up for $5, including a box of shells, when he was a kid.

He lent it to his buddy to go rabbit hunting, he never got it back, and Dad moved several provinces over. A few years ago, my Dads buddy shows up at the door with the shotgun and a old box of 16 guage paper shells, so the shotgun ended up wiht me...I'v eshot it a few times.:D

I bought a very nice Geha 12 guage from a fellow CGN member, and it is one of my favorite guns to take out to the range. She kicks like a mule, but is very accurate and shes one of the prettiest looking guns that I own, the stock has a very distinct tiger striping to it.

God ,how times have changed.
few years ago I had couple of these
show up and had a hell of a time to
get them out of the shop, I think
the prices where $ 20-25.oo ( or free?)

There is a member on here who has one in 16 gauge and last month was wanting to know if it would be interested in taking it on trade for a gun I was selling. I didn't do the deal but for the life of me I can't remember his user name (and I just deleted the messages a few days ago), Maybe post under the exchange section that you WTB and he maybe will see it.
