Bolt action storage question

I have a Winchester model 70 featherweight and I have always wondered how to store the bolt. Since it is a mauser style bolt should it be stored cocked or uncocked or am I just over thinking the whole thing?

I want to make sure I don't put unnecessary wear or tension on the spring. Any one have an educated answer?

I'm no expert but I store a bolt action rifle decocked.

Make SURE and then doubly sure you have nothing in the magazine or chamber, hold the trigger down and close the bolt. I guess you could dry fire a cocked bolt too, but I've never liked doing that.

I have also been holding the trigger and closing the bolt but still don't know if it is the recomended practice.

That's the way I do it, but I don't think it's a big deal. Dry firing won't hurt it, and leaving it cocked likely won't hurt it either. Do keep the bolt in the rifle: I've seen too many Cooeys and Lee Enfields at auction without bolts because grampa died and they couldn't figure out where he hid them.

Having helped an auctioneer for many years this is an understatement, many very valuable rifles minus the bolts were sold far below their actual value simply for that reason.
