Hey all. I'm looking to get into this sort of target shooting just for fun. Probably would only shoot 100m-300m for a while then hopefully push it out a bit further. Anyway I'm thinking of getting a .223 bolt action and scope. Any suggestions??

I'm thinking .223 as it seems maybe more cost efficient to start as i would just be shooting factory for the first while and maybe a few years down the road get into the long range reloading realm. Also might be nicer in the recoil department.

Any input/suggestions on a good 223 setup/scope or even if i should consider another caliber would be appreciated. Also what range could one expect a 223 effective to?? Thanks in advance.........:)

Look for something with a fast twist 1:9 or 1:8. You will be able to push 75-80 grain bullets out past 1000 yards. Start reloading as soon as possible.

Spend at LEAST as much on the glass as you do the rifle.

Practice and practice and practice, remember that most factory rifles are way more accurate than the shooter behind them.

I am a Remington and Zeiss user, but this is just MY preference, buy whatever fits/most comfortable for your body.

yup, CZ or Tikka. Great choices out of the box. My wife just bought a tikka today for hunting. Great rifles and a good price.

top-end would be a Remington 5R in 223 or a Savage Model 12 FTR in 223

Scopes can run from 200 to 5000. Buy the best you can afford, and get as much magnification as you can.

A 'starter' setup for me that worked very well was as follows:

Savage 10FP
Falcon Menace 4.5x18x56
EGW rail (20 MOA)
TPS HRT rings

I put the rifle in a Choate Ultimate Varmint stock and eventually upgraded the scope to an Elite 4200 Tactical 6x24x50. This combo ( which, incidentally, I still have albeit as a safe queen ) served me very well. I shot F class with this rifle without embarrasing myself and while not a consistent .5 MOA rifle it was a consistent .75 MOA.

This rifle liked ( and I assume still likes ) 69g smk's over 25.8 Varget.

Total cost IIRC was about $700 for the rifle, $350 for the stock and $450 or so for the Falcon, ($750 ish for the Elite ) $80 for rings and less than $100 for the rail. This was a reasonable cost for me to see if I liked the idea of precision/sniper/distance shooting - of course bloody thousands of dollars and numerous and expensive rigs later I still like it :)

700 Remington with AICS 1.5 stock and bipod. Ancient 3x9 used scope and a ton of fun. Took the 10 year old grandson to the range and he had a blast shooting the .223.
Scope is one I had in my spare parts bin and will do until I can afford another Vortex Viper.

Try a 1:8 twist T3 Varmint. I've got a $240 Vortex Crossfire 6-24X50 on mine until the Viper PSTs show up. The first time I'd shot it out to 1000yd was last weekend when I put 7 out of 20 80gr Amax onto a 10"X14" gong in a 10 mph 1/4 value wind. I still can't wipe the grin off my face.:dancingbanana::sniper:

I dont want to hijack your thread but ...

I am in the same situation.
Difference is I already have a Target rifle (Ar-15) ,but I want to shoot further than 200M.
I need a non restricted rifle for that.

5 rounds at 200M

I was gonna go for a .308 but since I already reload 223 I think am gonna stick with that.

I already got a scope I went with a Sightron 6-24X42. I had already one on my AR but 24X. Real nice optic in my opinion.

I cant make my mind which route I will go.
Savage or remington, I am using these 2 for Aftermarket parts and barrels. using other brands seems to make things harder when you want to upgrade.
Now do I start with a Cheap rifle 500-600$ remington sps or savage FV
or I should wait get more $$$ and go big with a Remington target or a savage FCP10 or 12FT/R
That is the Question

Also can someone give me a quick briefing on the lingo i should expect to see in my searches and what it means? Like "MOA" etc. No need to get to crazy here but maybe a few terms to expect and their meaning......

Or more my CZ Kevlar

I have about 100 rounds through mine now.I have tried 50gr,55gr,60gr,and 69gr bullets, and all will group under 1" for five shots,at 100 yards. So far,the 55gr ballistic tip is doing the best, averaging 5/8" consistently.Being that I have been shooting in freezing temperatures with gusting breezes, and with brass that is varying by 4 grains from case to case,I expect to do 1/2" or better next spring, with Lapua brass, and better shooting conditions.

MOA stands for "minute of angle" A rifle that shoots 1" at 100 yards is pretty standard. When you can get it below that, things get better. 1/2" at 100 is pretty damn good but not likely with factory ammo.

1" or 1/2" at 100 yards is the size of group. Smaller is better.

Pretty much the same here, shoots everything from 50 to 70 under an inch. Doesn't like 45's or 75's at all.

I recently bought a .223 bolt action rifle just for fun as well. To replace the .308 I sold.
I spent ~$210 on the scope (Bushnell 3200 10x Tactical) and under $600 for the rifle(Remington 700SPS Tactical 20"bbl). Added a sling and Harris bi-pod. So far I'm enjoying blasting paper targets where my .22lr can't reach.
My AR is getting upset because its not getting the range time as before.
