Bolt actionwhat should I get (Controlled feed)?

Hey don't get me wrong, I'm all for accuracy, the more the better......to a point.

The point is of course to have your bullet land within the kill zone which for sake of argument is a 10 inch diameter circle on the vitals of a whitetail. So at three hundred yards a 2moa level of accuracy would not cut it, it may very well land 6" away from point of aim, out of the killzone.

However a 1.5moa should theoretically put you inside that 10" ring even at 300 yards so this level should be considered good enough for three hundred and in, agreed?

Even then you are pushing it. By definition, a 1.5MOA gun can only land the first shot within 1.5 inches of POA so at 300 yards it will only land the shot within 4.5 inches of POA. Yes, you have a 10" kill zone but if you aim at the middle of that kill zone, it gives you 5 inches in any direction for error. Your gun is already within .5 inches of delivering a non-fatal shot and throw the slightest human or climatic factor in there and guess what.....a wounded critter. It takes a damn accurate gun to ethically use at long ranges and it takes ideal conditions and a practiced shooter. As Gate said, with a little work there a very few guns that won't shoot 1MOA so why hamper yourself if you intend on taking longer range shots.

I agree. If I can't get the rifle to shoot around MOA on a regularly, the rifle gets sold. 1.5-2 MOA is certainly acceptable to some, but not to me. I need to know that the bullet is going to be as close to POA as possible. Hitting the vitals with a clean kill shot is what is most important, and if I do my part and if I can't trust that the rifle will do its job of putting that bullet where I would like it to go, that is not good. Once I verify that a rifle and load combo is MOA to 100m, I confirm that the accuracy remains at longer distances as well, as that is where the accuracy is really needed. Hitting the vitals of a deer from 100 meters is not that difficult and most deer are taken from 100 yards or less. If I want to hit in the general area of POA, then I will use a shotgun loaded with bird shot.

Shouldn't a properly sighted in 1.5 moa gun be able to place all shots within .75 of an inch at 100 yards? If it shoots a 1.5" pattern at 100 yards, wouldn't you sight it in for the shots to center around the point of aim, not for one or the other extreme of the spread?

I've got a M70 featherwieght in .308 that gets about 1 MOA all day. No tuning, no trigger job, it just doesn't like 180 grains.
