Bolt catch lever

Hey guys,

I'm a lefty shooter, and I thought I'd try and make my life easier by having a phase 5 ambi bolt catch lever on my lower when I ordered it. Now I'm suspecting that it's causing issues with the bolt lock back after the last round on occasion, and I don't want that happening anymore. The bolt will lock back 100% of the time on an empty mag if I manually cycle it with the charging handle

I'm going to go back to an OEM lever or some kind of similar upgrade. Does anyone have any recommendations of what to get, or where to find one? I see normal ones in part kits, but I need just the lever/catch

For reference, the gun is a DDM4V5 upper with a BCM mod 0 lower. I was having short stroke issues, but after giving it a REALLY good lube job, it went away.

Thanks!

If you're going back to a standard bolt hold open, then the standard is pretty much the Magpul BAD.

With that said, if you were having short stroke issues before, and now the issues are returning with a different bolt release, it could be the same problem cropping up.

The charging handle will ALWAYS be more likely to engage the BHO, as you're pulling the bolt/carrier way further back than it needs to engage the BHO. If the gun is short stroking it could be just shy of capturing the BHO, but more than enough to feed ammo. You could check to see if the gas key is tight, and that your gas block is centered and all the way back on the barrel, and of course that your gas rings are not 'aligned' although this is almost an old wives tale as far as actual performance goes.

Are you using 5.56 ammo or just commercial spec .223? I believe that DD guns are gas ported for proper 5.56 NATO spec ammo, and some lower pressure .223 can short stroke a gun with that gas port size (some manufacturers oversize the gas port to work with .223 but 5.56 ends up being more abusive)

Just a few things to check or think about :)

Not a stab at anything but as a lefty shooter, why would you need an ambi mag catch/release? The controls on an AR are pretty much lefty friendly 'cept for the mag release. I guess if you were doing a shoot that has a weak hand part of it...

I run the Wilson combat oversized bolt release on all 5 of my AR's

Love the big paddle never had a malfunction

They come as a seperate part I think it's about 25$

To be honest I bought that part before even shooting my AR and seeing how easy/difficult the controls would be as a lefty. I've since been told that I should have an easy time hitting that lever with my trigger finger. I just need to get a normal one back on there to see if the BAD style lever was causing my issue.

In theory, it seems like it would be faster to hit after a mag change than an OEM style, since my thumb is right there. My hand positioning inserting a new mag allows me to twitch my thumb and release the bolt at the same time I'm seating the mag. In theory it's awesome, but I've read lots of reports claiming they mess up the bolt hold open, and now it's happening to me. Trial and error I guess
