Is there any way to effectively clean a bolt WITHOUT dismantling it? I have a couple of Savages, and the disassembly (or reassembly) is supposed to be a dog's breakfast.

Cheers

Is it a Savage 110(or similar)?. If so, the bolt is one of the simplest to take apart - and more importantly, put back together. The only tool needed is either a Allen wrench or a Loonie - depending on the age of the rifle.

Here's a description from Brownells site.

Here’s a quick rundown on how to take the bolt apart. Start by removing the rear bolt plug. Depending on the age of your rifle, it will be a large, standard screw slot, on later models it will be an Allen head. Remove the bolt handle, remove the baffle assembly, pull out the cocking piece pin, and remove the cocking piece sleeve followed by the firing pin assembly.

This doesn't describe a total take-down - just enough to do a through cleaning.

Reassemble in reverse order:)

It's a 111 (more recent than the 110). Some stuff I'Ve seen online suggests the newer ones are quite difficult to reassemble.
