Would any of you smart fellers be able to tell me what bolt face and case length action (caliber) would be compatible so I could have a gunsmith spin my .257 Roberts barrel into the action and not have to re-work everything? Or is that even possible?

To the best of my knowledge the .257 bolt face is .467" and the case length is 2.99".

Thanks,
Dave

Check out reloading information at www.nosler.com. They are showing overall cartridge length at 2.780. The case itself is 2.233". At these standard dimensions, it would work well in a 308 length action. There is a line of thinking to chamber this cartridge in 30-06 length actions so that heavier bullets can be seated out further than standard. If you are starting from a pre chambered barrel, especially if it has or had sights mounted, it is a bit of commotion and would be amazingly lucky to square off breeching faces of action and barrel, set clearance for bolt nose/face, have the sights actually index to the receiver, all without affecting the initial chambering dimensions. Best to plan that the chamber will need to be deepened once barrel properly fitted and indexed to receiver.

Thanks for the info Potashminer. I am not sure why my info appears to be incorrect but you are right, I need to spend some time doing some research on my bolt face and case length.

It sounds like re-barreling is more of a project than I initially thought so I will have to give the idea more consideration. I was hoping to re-barrel a Model 70 and have a 257 Roberts to play with and add to my collection.

The rim is .473 same as the 308 and 243 etc. Any standard short action will work with the .473 bolt face. It can be built on a long action of the 30/06 family as well

Think it needs a long action. Acti9onlengths usually apply to Remington M700's. Win M70's are all the same. Suspect you're looking for a used Ruger rifle as nobody appears to chamber a .257 now. Shooter's Choice in Waterloo is listing a custom .257 rifle. No price listed.
No W's.
