I know you can open up a boltface to a bigger diameter, but is there away to close it up a bit? The reason I ask is I have a .17 Remington barrel for a 700, and have been told that I can get the threads cut down to fit my small shank Turk. Mauser. I guess they call them turkingtons! :D But I have a .473 boltface for the 8X57. Is there anything that can be done here? Thanks :)

I'd have to say No. you would have to weld up the bolt face and reface it to the smaller diameter then re-heat treat the bolt I don't think it is practical

It is not just the bolt face but the extractor will not work either.... nor the magazine.

You could have a custom extactor made and soft solder a ring on the bolt face for the smaller case and make a single shot......

Threading, fitting and all the custom work with a low value product in the end ... big $ spent... cheaper to buy a new .17 in the long run....

Very few custom projects ever recoup the costs when you try and sell them..... I have seen guys spend $1000 and end up with something they struggle to get $500 for.

I saw a Mauser that PH had done up in .222. The bolt face had been recut, but I don't think anything had been added. The extractor had been changed, of course, along with the magazine. Probably the ejector as well. Personally, I think that this would be a challenging conversion - not one I'd want to be paying a 'smith an hourly rate to do. The barrel could be rethreaded, but you would also need a reamer and gauges to reset the headspace.

Thanks for the replies, I figured that my Turk is really not a great candidate to put a after market barrel on it, (not worth the money) so thought the barrel I have would be good enough, and was told it shouldnt cost over $100 to cut new threads on it.

The Turk 98 CAN be made to look as good as any commercial Mauser, but this can get pricey - facing the action, filing and polishing it, aftermarket parts, hinged floorplate, swing safety, etc. etc. etc.

If you;re going to all that work, why put a Remmy bbl on it? Unless you do everything yourself and labor is free ;)
