Bolt handle Welding

I TIG weld 20+ of the SCREWED handles a year.
Structural integrity of the cast OEM handle is sacrificed.

The Louisville slugger base ball bat Tac-ti-Cool knob added to the OEM handle will break at the wrist unless done correctly.

If you are reaching for a shifter knob-you are wasting time.

anyone try brazing a bolt handle on ?
i'm thinking in terms of a mig welder set up with brass wire , rather than oxy acetylene .

Not practical. You are better off mig welding with steel filler wire. The best way to weld the considerable depth of the bolt handle joint is to open it to a V and fill the V in multiple passes.

To braze, you need heat and flow in to the joint. Not practical with that type of joint and a mig.

Where are you located?

I think people are discussing two different things here. What I'm talking about is when you chop off the factory knob on the handle, thread or machine the stub, fit a new oversize handle on, and weld it in place. No timing required there.
Now if we are talking about removing the entire handle from the bolt, replacing it with something else or just redoing it, then timing is an issue.
$54 for my first suggestion is an awesome deal. $54 for the next thing would be incredibly cheap. I'd expect to pay a lot more for that.

Wish this had come up earlier I would have had him do my PT&G bolt. Silver brazing is a pain in the arse and frankly $54 is outstanding value for money considering the work involved.

I had a guy in Northern Ontario do an excellent job of it for me last week. Three of us did it at once. Cost us $85 each including shipping. I think the guy is ex-CF. PM for contact details.
