I had an 1895 Spanish Mauser action off a 7x57 carbine with a shot-out barrel. I got a 'smith to install a new Swede 6.5x55 barrel in it and he put it in a sporter stock.

When I shot it at the range I damn near needed a chunk of 2x4 to open the bolt.

I tried a few more shots and they were all the same.

What's that all about?

I was using military Swede surplus hard point ammunition.

Was the barrel a factory surplus barrel or a blank the smith turned and chambered for you? Also do the rounds just drop into the chamber like the "plunk test" if its not a surplus barrel it may have short or tight throat

Also are they factory loaded surplus? Because they are pretty low pressure compaired to the EU commercial loaded stuff.

I wonder if the he tried firing it before sending it back to you.

It was a new surplus barrel from Tradex.

Yes factory loaded surplus.

No, I don't believe he test fired it.

He was an older man, a retired 'smith who did it as a favour to me.

He said he had had to shorten the barrel a thread or something like that.

Hard extraction can be a couple of things... excessive pressure and/or a rough chamber and/or not enough initial extraction cam...

If the fired brass looks okay rule that out.

I suggest you have a gunsmith look at it... possibly the throat needs to be lengthened to reduce pressure.
