Bolt Mounted Peep

I'm not that hot on the idea of a sight mounted on a moving part like that, either, but those peeps mounted on the rear of the actions, as shown in Josqin's post, look like something to watch for in the parts bins!

They would preclude the use of a scope, of course, unless it was in a high side mount or able to be set ahead of the ocular bell. But they certainly look very trim and neat. Apparently they're as rare as rocking horse poo, though. With a milling machine and enough time and skill one could make something similar, I suppose.

At least one manufacturer (Talley, I think) makes a small, spring-loaded but adjustable aperture that is machined into a Weaver-type scope base (for the Remington 700 only, IIRC). I saw a similar one from another manufacturer but I can't remember where.

On a Lyman, the vertical arm folds back, so a scope would be no problem. I believe that the gunsmithing text by James V. Howe has plans for a cocking piece sight.

Longer sight picture perhaps?
Could have been an expected style back then.

Some ideas are lost to history, but there must have been a good reason given the amount of work to build such a set up.
 
Closer to your eye, easier to sight through. Regarding the scope and peep mounting, Redfield used to sell a mount that was basically the same as a Leupold turn in mount, but had a small flip up peep sight mounted on the rear of the mount, out of the way of the scope and rings. They work quite well, I have three or four of them, buy them every chance I get at gun shows. - dan

The Redfield may have been one of the ones I read about. I just checked the Talley website and I was wrong: they make a removable sight, similar to the XS or NEGC, but not one actually built into the base.
