Do you use one? Which one and why? Do you really need it or just an add on?

The bolt release on mine is factory and it's a hard mofo if not near impossible to use. Would like that option....but then again just using the handle works fine.

Had an extended on one of my earlier rifles and I just that pretty much each time I laid my rifle on it's left side, it would do it's magic and release the bolt.

I don't use them anymore on my rifles for the following reasons
one, I hate it when I lay the rifle down on that side and the action slams shut because the bolt release hits the table first
second and more importantly, some of my rifles don't go fully and reliably into lockup when releasing the bolt with the release, never a failure using the oprod to chamber a round as was intended in the rifle's designed. the stock m14 bolt catch is not used to release the bolt, it's only there to hold the bolt back on an empty mag.
just my 2 pennies tho.......

I installed one made by sadlak, I never use it as it's intended just as a replacement for the faulty piece my rifle came with. Sadly my rifle was supposedly gone over "every millimeter" by a certain m14 guru yet still arrived in my hands with a faulty hold open and mag latch.

That's a pic of the mag release....may as well get one of those too lol

I agree, no need to rush out and then buy one, install it and then realize that what 45acpking said was right. It results in the bolt slamming forward upon resting the left side of the rifle on the shooting bench.

Now for you CQB types who can afford to shoot .308 at CQB matches, that's another thing. I love mine for (SEI unit) that purpose. On the bench however, it's a royal pain.

Hope all this helps!

Cheers and keep helping the noobs around here (prevent #### loss)

I've never actually released the bolt with the bolt release. It's too damn fun to just rack the charging handle back and let 'er fly!
Mag release is another story, I'm interested in that upgrade.

Barney, I wonder if you will see more .308's at CQB with the new AIA mags?

My heavy rig has standard mag release and bolt catch. My shorty has the big mag release and bolt release but it was more of a fun bit to add on. I am not a huge bolt release user for any firearm. On ARs, I rack the charging handle and on pistols I pull the slide.

It's handy on an AR because the charging handle is in an awkward location and needs to be pulled way back but on the M-14 the handle could be worked with a winter boot and is easy to grasp even with your cheek welded to the stock.

I also replaced a faulty factory one with an aftermarket bolt release. Ive never had it not go into battery and dont have a problem with laying it on its side because of the scope and scope mount. Would I rush out and buy one if my bolt stop worked fine, probably not.

I have an SEI bolt release on my M14S. I find it a lot faster and a lot more fun to use than pulling back on the CH. Never had an issue with it other than it was a bit of a pain to install. I have a bipod on the gun so I've never had to lay it on its side.

Ditto, my rifle's bolt catch was out of spec. The Magwedge one works great, I tend to lay the rifle down on the right side as I grab it in my right hand, on my right.
