Bolt vs Semi for Moose/Deer hunting

Just bought a 750woodsmaster for deer this fall. Have never been hunting deer before. But Ive used C7s in another life. I can honestly say that as long as I kept it clean and lubricated it never gave me a problem and that was firing blanks. The great part is that the recoil should be very light. Since I have no intention of competing with this rifle then aslong as it will put it in a 10cm dia circle at 200yrds it's everything I need. Im not sure why you would need a "1/2 moa" at 200yrds when I would think most of your shooting will be done from the standing anyway. Could be wrong, it's happened before; but it's rare. :)

I would choose lever, pump or bolt over semi, especially if I were only to take 1 firearm. Although the semi might feel powerful and a quick second chance, they have been known to fail on the first try.

Semi's are prone to jamming and slowing down in the cold (from oil etc...). you have to be very careful to being using a correct oil to not have this effect. I have heard about many people driving north to end up with a firearm that won't shoot in the cold.

with a bolt, lever, pump...you can use your own power to compensate for the extra stiffness in the action from weather.

On a side note, 1 shot should be good enough. If you require a semi to take an animal, you probably shouldn't be hunting. When some people use a semi, they tend to rely less on aiming and more on splatter. This quite often allows the animal to escape and lots of laughter from neighboring hunters.

This information has been researched, not experienced by me. But I have heard these from many different sources. Another thing to take note, a lot of people take a second rifle when they travel to hunt. Nothing worse then going somewhere to have no reason to be there.

A cheap $100 303 enfield can act great as a primary/secondary hunting rifle. I know many people who use these rifles as their primary weapon for moose and deer.

i do a variety of hunting in different terrain... coastal blacktails for example.... while they do get shot in cuts and burns ect, the majority are bagged by those who wander off the path and into the thick cover to get up close and personal. Under 50 yard shots are the norm for me in these areas. In my region of B.C. you are also allowed 2 bucks, harvestable on the same day or otherwise. Here, a semi does have it's advantages... a semi like the sks, if it is a straight shooter, the 7.62 x 39 123gr SP is the perfect caliber/bullet choice for these deer and an sks is a fast swinging reliably functioning TOOL that i have seen effectively take blacktail in a clean and orderly fashion. I generally go for my .303 smle lithgow bolt, but my partner uses his custom stocked yugo sks and i've seen him swing on fast moving deer at close ranges and put them down with one shot.... the second shot being for the other buck still standin there wondering WTF.
In the hands of a TOOL any action of firearm can be a challenge
Learn to use a TOOL skillfully and you yourself won't look like a TOOL

therre is a time and place for semi's as is there a time and place for bolt or pump guns..... there's a time and place for belt fed too but..... I digress :50cal:

You completely misread what he said - and calm down. He doesn't owe an appology to anyone, just settle down and re-read the posts. If you feel someone has violated the rules of the board, call in a mod.

Next time, don't screw around with half assed efforts, if you want to piss him off that bad just kick senior in the balls and drink his beer or something :) Now play nice. lots of people use semi's as you well know.

Senior,
From the mouth of a Troll

It seems this dribble is all you contribute to CGN!

Just why are you here?
There's obviously nothing more you could learn

C'mon bud, no personal insults please! I realize the debate can get heated but lets keep it civil.

Hey,

That's my friend, ggpr, who I was responding too. He was very emotional over his post being such a source of contention, so I did what any friend would do. I registered on here and flamed him :p lol.

But seriously, I'm a new member and I'm going for my PAL and hunting registration this fall and I look forward being around here.

Cheers,

BM

Just kick him square in the nuts next time, like the rest of us do. :D

Sorry!!..no not sorry, you mods let jerk-offs post comment after comment that amount to nothing but trolling time after time with-out saying anything. They contribute absolutely nothing to this forum as far as info, help, advice or even an reasonable opinion unless that is what you call reasonable opinions

& no I'm not heated up just calling a spade a spade!
If fact I think it's very obvious the reason they can't make a decent contribution, inexperience and..or a lack of hunting, shooting skills!

I don't "let" anybody do anything of the kind.

Between this section and politics, there's something like 1000 to 2000 posts a day. I'm doing fairly well if i can read half of them, and sometimes it's not even that much. The other mods aren't much better off, most of us have more than one section to watch. So we miss some. (and now that i notice, this is hunting arms, not hunting like i originally thought)

If you see a 'troll' posting crap comments, then for chrissake COMPLAIN. Let the mods for whatever forum you see it in know, and they'll deal with it.

We don't get paid for this you know :) we can't be everywhere.

Well first off he got a comment about that from me too didn't he. And second, grow a slightly thicker skin bud. The comment was a little silly, but it's not like he insulted you personaly and if you take things that way reading these forums is going to send your blood pressure thru the roof.

In any case, we do have a 'no insults' policy here, and directly insulting him and calling him a troll isn't appropriate.

Well in the future, think it to yourself. Or like i say, if someones' being a dink, then just tell the mods and let them handle it.

heres the scene most people associate with semi auto hunters.

a doe steps into an open clearing a few more follow some more does and there fawns all of a sudden the far edge of the forest erroupts with rifle fire from 50 "hunter" the deer duck and cover 30 minutes later the dear get up un hamed and walk away when the hunters run out of ammo

this is not allways the case semis have they're advantages in close country with heavy brush where the range of the 7.62x 39 is plenty powerfull for an ethical kill and in rapid situations where they're are only a few seconds fr the shot before te deer is lost

in situations where you have 2-300 yards of open grass lands with scrub and can take long planned out shoots from a stand a bolt will do just fine

there are people with more kills with an sks then some with BAR in 300 win mag

as long as you make the first shoot count what fired it doesn't matter as long as you make a clean efficiant kill keep your ranges with in your personal limitations as long as you can hit a pie plate sized target at about 50+ yards from your expected ranges you'll go home deer having the extra rounds only works if you can use them quickly and cleanly a gut shoot from a 308 semi is the same as a gut shoot from a bolt

OUCH, my tounge hurts, musta bit it :D

Like I said doesn't bother me, I just look where it comes from.

But there are a lot of newbies that don't need to hear such crap & assume that's normal opinions & type of actions from respectable members of the hunting comunity!

There are 12 guys that hunt out of our camp out of the 12 8 to 10 carry auto loaders, There cleaned each night and locked up. I am not one of those guys that carried an auto. I am thinking back many years before I can say with complete honesty when a deer was missed or let go because of a failure to the gun. Many due to the shooter yes of course, I seem to recall the last one that happened 6-7 years back was an extractor. Our deer hunt 1/2 the deer or shot ahead of the dogs, half out of tree stands. Could i honestly give on average 80 yard shot, an advantage to one or the other NO! really even though I am not an auto loader fan, I can give in to the fact its my own personal opinion, and really I cant say whats better. I infact feel way more comfortable with a bolt gun in hand, but really those are my hands and eyes and my opinion!
Speek as you may but i seen many 308 & 30-06 shoot as well at 100 yards as many bolt guns do take it or leave it, and those autos make some bolt guns in the average mans hands make a bolt gun look bad. I have seen a few cloverleave with factory ammo, seen a few shoot MObaseball too, but seen some bolt guns do both as well? go figure.

You are doing a GREAT JOB bud. Thanks for all your hard work. I would have to say that you are one of the more reasoned members on this board and enjoy reading, and always come away with a different perspective on things,
with your posts. And yes it may seem like a bit of ass kissing on my part, but I like to give credit where it is due.

Thanks

When hunting it is not unusual to hear someone else shoot. When I hear one shot, and maybe another a minute later, i know someone scored.

When I hear 3 or 4 or 5 shots in a row, I know someone missed.

one of the rifles I carry is a Martini Enfield in 45-70. (a single shot). It is topped with a 3X scope. If you hear it there is an excellent chance I scored.

This is because I am a good shot and I know I have to make the first shot count. I find I have that same mental attitude with every rifle I carry, except a semi auto. I sometimes carry a Rem 7400 carbine or a Ruger Mini 30.

With a semi auto I find myself thinking of the second shot before I fire the first. dumb, eh?
