Hey I just got my Remington 700 SPS Varmint and was wondering if there is any way to relieve the firing pin with the bolt removed from the rifle?

You can uncock it by twisting the rear of the bolt. It is a pain in the ass to recock it to put the bolt back in. A pair of pliars with rubber wrapped around the jaws will do the trick without gooning up the finish.

You can purchase a bolt/firing pin disassembly tool for the M-700, but as said above, there is no need to take the strain off the spring. Good coil springs do not take a set, and cycling a spring causes more fatigue, rather than simple long term compression.

Theres no need to relieve the pressure, and to be frank that spring is under about the same amount of compression whether it's cocked or uncocked.

On a only slightly related note the slickest way I've seen to field strip and reassemble a Remington bolt is to hook the cocking piece under your bootlace, pull and twist. You could recock the bolt like that if you still want to drop the striker.

If you want to remove the firing pin you want one of these

POOR MAN way to remove the rear portion of a remmy bolt is to :
1- pull down the cocking part (2 notch on the back) against a WOOD bench
2- when you see the notch on the side of the cocking part, insert a coin in it (quarter work good)
3- VOILA !! you are free to unscrew and screw the rear of the bolt as long as the coin is in place

I now have all the tooling to do it properly but this way, help my to clean and lub the spring and the inside of the bolt itself...

I think I have broken every finger in my right hand doing this in the past. Not to mention the edges of my bench have seen better days.

Easy way is to leave the bolt in the rifle and decock it with the trigger. Get a trigger lock if it is a storage issue. Did I mention that you can disassemble Barnard bolts or decock them with out tools?
