The "expert" behind the counter at WSS Nanaimo recommended i buy the deluxe die set plus a factory crimp die for my 30-30 Marlin... it turns out that not only do i not need one of the dies, i actually shouldn't use it in a levergun! and this set up cost twice as much as the pacesetter set i really needed. unfortunately my wife washed my jeans and turfed the reciept so im stuck with it. :bangHead:
I have had nothing but problems with that store, if the other local gun store could compete with their prices i'd never go back!

Who was the "expert"that told you that?

Your Marlin is a very strong action with much less flex than say a Winchester M94. It is very possible that neck-sized ammo may work very well in your rifle. The only way to find out is to try it. You may find that extra die may save you hundreds of dollars in cartridge cases over the life of the rifle.

The expert that told him that was the die manufacturer
 
If you want something from WSS, first, find the part number in a catalog or on the website. Second, call and see if they are showing stock. If they show less than 10, don't bother going...they don't have it. Third, drive to the store and go directly to where the item is kept. If you don't know, you're screwed because THEY sure as hell don't know. Go to the check-out and watch as they're ringing stuff through that they aren't overcharging you. Last, try to get out of the parkinglot without getting hit by cousin Bob's 4x4 with the tobacco stains down the side.

The way I look at it is you can never have too many dies or combinations of dies.
Who knows what you'll need a year or ten from now?

Need 40 rounds of 8mm Rem.Mag,284 Winchester or 6.5 Rem Mag?
Hand me the brass and sit back for an hour.:D

Is this worth the extra "good advice" you may or may not get from your local "expert"?
 
I make a point of thoroughly researching my purchases well in advance and NEVER trusting the monkeys at wholesale for advice. I have been told all sorts of garbage there, from "Normal hunting in alberta is shooting a deer from the far side of a quarter section" to ".270 won't kill a moose".

Always research yourself, never trust one source.
 
If you do not want the die set, take them back to WSS and tell them you lost the receipt. They will not give you your money back but they will probably allow you to exchange it or they will give you a store credit. If you act reasonable when you try and return it, they will treat you reasonably, if you act like a ####, well......

If there is a little white sticky tag on the box there will be no problem, again you will not get cash back, but it is better then not getting the right one.

Does the deluxe set not include a factory crimp die, or does it include a neck sizer? FWIW, I have heard many people have very good results with their crimp die in levers.
 
deluxe kit comes with a full length sizer, a collet neck sizer, and a dead length seating die. The factory crimp die i had to buy seperate. i would have only needed the pacesetter kit which has a regular full length sizer, bullet seater with a roll crimp and a factory crimp die. at this point im just going to keep it, i didn't have any problems cycling the rounds through the gun, and for the difference of $25 i have an extra die. i'll full length size once every 3 loadings though so as not to push my luck.
down the road i'd like to experiment with some two shot spitzer rounds and see what it will do. i know it isn't a benchrest gun, and i didn't intend to try and treat it like one, but it isn't all that bad either. it would shoot 1.25" at 100m when i had it scoped with federal powershocks. levergun, truckgun or whatever i don't think it's a bad thing to want it to shoot as accurately as possable.
