I got a 2.5x-8x Leupold with this reticle pattern on the way for my SMLE, any opinions as to it's utility over the regular plex reticle? Are the target/tactical turrets necessary with this reticle type? Regards FT.

If you want the scope for true tactical or target shooting, the B&C reticle isn't the answer.
What it IS the answer for, in my opinion, is a hunting reticle, and I believe it is the best of them.
I have the same scope on my '06, and having quick aiming points at the blink of an eye is excellent.
It takes the hunting process of ranging, then calculating holdover, to ranging only.
If you're one who will never encounter or consider a shot opportunity beyond 250, it's not much advantage. Otherwise, it's great.

I've got a couple, one on a 7STW and one on a 22/250. As luck would have it I haven't need to use it yet in a hunting situation with the STW, but this 7mm sighted for 300 yards doesn't need a lot of help either. On the 22/250 I getting great mileage out of it for coyote hunting. The 450 yard line is awful convenient for shooting fence-line to fence-line. (440 yards). A side benefit is I have always found the standard Leupold duplex a little skinny and the B&C is just heavier enough to make the difference. That's just me splitting hairs though.

Suppose I did want to get a scope with a reticle pattern more in line with target shooting, what would you suggest?
Well, for the kind of varied ranges I shoot at, I think a Mil-dot, or even better a Milling reticle with hash marks like the Leupold TMR or IOR MP-8 are the best.
If you're planning on shooting mostly at one distance, I like either a very fine crosshair, or perhaps a crosshair with a dot in the centre.
DISCLAIMER: I am not a serious target shooter in the truest sense of the word. I've recently gotten into precision shooting, but in the tactical/sniper sense. I like to practice by moving from 100-500m and back on clays etc. Not really traditional target format LOL.
If you want lots of input from benchrest/TR/F-class type guys, make a post in Precision Rifles. There are a ton of very successful target shooters here on CGN!
