border fee?

recently ordered a stock from rimfiresports.com. stock cam to around $130 with shipping. however when it was delivered, they charged my mom $20 on site by visa for border fees? whats the deal with this?
maybe i should just charge the border a $20 fee for my mothers inconvenience and make them pay it on site?
can anyone explain this FEE?

It's duty for crossing the border. Same thing if you go buy it, and drive it back across the border yourself.

Duty is like a tax on everything brought into the country. If you had bought it in Canada, the retailer/importer/distributor would have already paid that, and it would have cost you $150. That's one of the reasons goods are more expensive this side of the border.

Canada post/ups/fedex/carrier already paid it to get it into Canada, and they are simply recovering that fee from you, COD.

Duty and Tax are two different things. Mant items are not subject to "Duty", but sales taxes is another story

Who delivered it..?
If it was fedEx/UPS or someone other than CP I bet it's a brokerage fee.
If it was CP then they're just collecting sales tax...

Because of the price of the item, you would most likely have to pay HST on it plus either a $5 or $8 handling fee charged by Canada Post for having to collect the HST.... That part is BS but what can ya do?

We read plenty of #####in' and complainin' about shipping charges, brokerage fees and other shipping costs, but really... Getting objects moved from one end of the globe to the other for a few $$ is pretty cool. You couldn't transport stuff yourself for less.
Educate yourself BEFORE ordering stuff that needs to be shipped and make an informed decision as to wether or not you're okay with paying whatever the cost is to get your stuff shipped.
The posts I read where some guy is complaining about shipping costs come across like the fee was a big surprise to the poster... Ask first, Click "SUBMIT ORDER" second :D

Indeed. An informed consumer is a happy consumer! :D It always pays to know how YOU want something shipped and not just go with whatever the seller uses as a default. I learned my lesson years ago when I paid $80 in UPS brokerage fees for a $100 paintball gun that I bought off of eBay.
 
its not the fee thats the problem. it was the lack of prior knowledge. rimfiresports charges an extra 10dollars for stocks to canada. i would have had no problem paying the 20 before hand, but i didnt know it existed. lesson learned.
 
U.S. Shipping fees

I always specify USPS (United States Postal Service.) UPS and other shipping companies charge brokerage fees on parcels. I think UPS minimum is $40, which makes things expensive.

If it is opened by Canada Customs, they assess it and charge duty and GST. Then another $5 is added for the collection by Canada Post. However, after assessing the fees, they then send the parcel along, and you can get it at the post office. Many of my E-Bay purchases come right through without charges.

If you think you have been wrongly overcharged, you can fill out a form that is attached to your package by Customs, and send it in.

Never UPS. If they don't want to send it USPS, then I don't order it.
