Bore cleaning?

I got my brand new 870P with ghost ring sights just before Xmas. I was happy for that Xmas gift ….

And I have to say I am new to guns and shotguns.

Picture of the gun:

Yesterday I sighted the gun in and I got a 5 inch group with slugs at 50m with ghost ring sights. I am pretty happy with that.

5 inch group:

I put around 15 – 20 Brenneke type slugs through the gun … and a couple of buckshot loads.

Today I started cleaning the gun … and after passing the brush and then a patch through the barrel for around the 20th time … (my arm is getting tired from pushing the rod through the barrel) … the patches are still dirty like hell? What is this? It looks like lead deposits … and when I look through the bore … it is not clean and shiny.

Here a picture of what the patch looks like after around 20 times brushing the barrel and running a patch:

I am using Ballistol and Hoppes #9 for cleaning the barrel.

So I am wondering … is this normal? Is there a better method for cleaning the bore?

Probably normal in a new barrel that wasn't highly polished by the manufacturer. Try a cleaning rod with a brass brush wrapped with 4/0 steel wool. Secure the barrel in a vise and and chuck the cleaning rod in a 3/8 inch drill for best results; introduce brush from chamber end and keep it moving back and forth. First the barrel will get clean and then it will be burnished so lead build-up will become less of a problem.

I shoot around 15,000 shells through my trap gun per year. I may clean it twice a year. A couple of passes with a bore Snake and some G96 work good. It isn't a rifle and the projectile is contained in a plastic wad, so it doesn't affect the way it shoots.

Thanks for the infos guys ..... much appreciated.

Ok, after I did another 20 brushing and swipes I gave up .... still the same black stuff coming out of the barrel .... dark smear ...
I will have to find a different method of cleaning that barrel ...

Right now the gun is soaking in Ballistol.

I am wondering .... what will happen if I just leave the lead residue in there?
Will the lead deposits affect the gun negatively in any way? Accuracy? Rust? Other?

???

Thanks.

I don't get too carried away with smoothbore shotgun barrels myself. I run a patch soaked in hoppes solvent , then swab/mop down the barrel , wipe the swab/mop off in a rag , g96 or wipe out in the barrel , let sit for 5 and run the swab/mop through again and final run is my boresnake with clp or some gun oil applied liberally to it. Then gun in safe. I've never had any rust or accuracy affected and some barrels will get cleaner than others. For example my Beretta 391 will shine after and the boresnake comes out looking clean on that final run whereas my DA outlaw is a little dirtier and the bore is never perfectly clean looking it seems. Both still shoot the same as they always did respectively and no rust but the DA outlaw barrel always has that bit dirtier tarnished look even when cleaned and is dirtier after firing usually , seems to pick up and keep more dirt/carbon.

Sigrunes,

thanks for sharing .... what you are saying would confirm my observations ... I have a Benelli Nova and after shooting the same amount of slugs through it I am able to clean the bore clean ... no more black smear coming out. But the 870P .... uffffff .... I put my little finger into the muzzle and I can feel how uneven/unpolisged the inside barrel is .... :-(

Ok, I followed bluedcanoed's (Bob's) advise.

Got some extra fine steel wool ... drilled a whole in an empty shotshell to server as a rod guide and polished/cleaned the barrel with a drill.
The barrel is now more than shiny ... and totally clean, and polished.

When I got the gun and before shooting it I looked down the muzzle and there were tool marks ... or what looked like tool marks. Keep in mind this is a brand new gun ... 870P. And then I entered my little finger and I could feel whatever it was in there. After polishing it I can still see some of those marks ... but I can't feel them any more. It is nice and smooth in there now ...

I did this as well years ago on an old double barrel that had some rust in the barrel, I started with some fine emery paper, and finished with steel wool, they came out like new or better.
