I don't want to be a killjoy or any thing but if you have a boltgun the best fastest way to sight in is to put rifle on firm rest like sandbags, sight through barrel and centre on target, move eve up to scope and adjust crosshairs. You can move eye back and forth until done, this is quickest, most precise, least expensive way to boresight. You can do it in your house with a scaled down target or a small circle drawn on a box or some such.

There is no doubt that you can bore sight a rifle by taking out the bolt and looking down the bore, but after bore sighting a couple of hundred rifles or so with my Bushnell bore sighter, I find it to be a quicker and more precise method.

exactly.... i want to get a sighter to start where i want to be, dial it in with some rounds... but i figure if i can get it where i want at home.. then fine tune, saves some time and such at the range in the cold.... being picky with adjustments

Here's what I had to do to bore sight a rifle for a long range match. Iron sights at 800, 900 and 1000 yards. Main target rifle needed a new barrel to I pulled out my old target rifle and started looking around for parts to put it back together. Well I used the front sight on another rifle so I made a new one on my CNC machine. Couldn't find the rear sight for the rifle so I borrowed one from another rifle (.223) Plumbed the sights and bore sighted it in the shop at 50 ft.

First match, unlimited sighters and 15 shots for score at 800 yards. Asked my buddy to look through his spotting scope and let me know where I was hitting. 1st shot hit the 500 yard mound. Cranked up a couple handfuls of elevation. 2nd shot hit the 300 yard mound. A few more handfuls of elevation and the 3rd shot hit just below and a little left of the target. Came up 5 minutes and right 2 minutes and fired shot number 4 into the 4 ring at 8 o'clock. Up 1 minute and right another minute and fired a bull for my 5th sighter. After shooting 800, 900 and 1000 yards and after the smoke cleared I had won the match.

From bore sighting at 50 ft in the shop to shooting a bullseye at 800 yards only took 5 rounds. I can't for the life of me figure out why some guys take 5 boxes of ammo and 3 trips to the range to zero a rifle.
