Well, it looks like outoftowner wants to invest in a good old mosin. Now after taking some advice from the reloading book it tells me that I should slug the bore.

So where would I get some lead slugs for the bore. Or would any of you casters be nice enough to melt some out for me (if thats even physically possible)

I use either soft oversize bullets (something like 20:1 alloy), or fishing sinkers (the egg type with the hole in the middle). But be careful that they are the soft lead type not steel! There are a few articles on the web as to how to do it properly.

Chris.

"...with a chunk of doweling..." Use a cast .30 cal bullet or lead fishing sinker and a 1/4" brass or Al rod and a plastic mallet. Doweling is too soft and can break in the barrel. The assorted forums are full of posts about how to get dowels out of barrels.
"...from breech to bore..." Breech to muzzle. That's best, but muzzle to receiver works too. The plastic mallet won't damage the crown.

30 cal cast bullet may not work, as the bore might be larger than the bullet. If the bullet is .309-.310, and the bore is .312, then it won't tell you what you want to know. I've not done it, but I'd use the fishing sinker if I were going to, have lots of those kicking around.

If you're going to use a bullet, use the biggest, softest one you can find.

Ok, should I just go into a fishing store and find an appropriate sized sinker? (honestly I have never fished a day in my life) And then just pound her down there? Oh ya, I meant breech to muzzle, got my words mixed up lol. And I'll head to my local metal store and pick up some brass then.

Most guys not into black powder have little use for anything but hard lead, and as such, probably do not have anything soft enough for a bore driving episode.
The lead fishing sinker, or, a soft lead ball, available from your gunshop, will work fine. Make sure it's significantly larger than the bore.
The push will be tight at first, (You may wonder what you've gone and done) then smooth out.
Be sure to use a dowel that is a good fit for the bore, not an undersized dowel, or you may jam the whole mess in the bore.

Bore slug

use 000 buck shot, it will sheer to the correct size when entering the bore and compress to exact bore dimensions while being pushed (hammered) through the bore.

Is buckshot lead? I thought they wanted to change that all to steel after that lake in the US ducks were dieing from lead poisoning from buckshot.

Except for certain loads of buckshot which have copper coated lead, all buckshot is going to be lead. It's migratory birds you need to use steel or bismuth birdshot for, anything else and lead is still the way to go.

outoftowner, "i hope i have wrote your name well", i find on Google a website just by writing this: 7.62x54R and the web address is: 7.62x54R.NET. You wil find all answers to yours questions about Nagant's rifle of all brands. There is a special section for the specific
diameter of the bore for all brands. It's is a must for Nagant users.
