Does saying my 12 bore or my 28 bore etc, some how increase the value of junky SXS shotguns or is it a way to sound more right?

I’m sure I look a bit confused when I hear someone say bore when referencing anything other than a “true bore” shotgun. I often hear the English gents in videos who represent the bespoke gun companies referring to gauge as bore?

8 bore and 10 bore sound good when referring to the old blackpowder bore rifles.

I'm a bit nervous about weighing in on this. SuperBrad is correct, technically. But that's not what happens in the real world. The Brits call it bore, the Americans call it gauge, we follow the American example.

As has been noted, if you want to try to add a bit of sheen to a British gun, go ahead, call it bore. But don't do that to a Fox or a Parker.

At the end of the day, IMHO it's like calling it the action flats or the water table. Same thing. No big deal.

How about "12 to the pound"? Only the British could come up with this form of measurment.

The '12' in 12 bore is not as you might expect a unit of length but a division of weight.
The 12 refers to a 12th of 1 pound of lead or more specifically a pound of lead can be turned into twelve balls of equal size that equate to the barrel diameter of what we know as a 12-bore (0.729").

Bore is just the logical small arm progression from artillery: 32 pounder >>> 2 pounder >>> 1/14th pounder. Oops. That's awkward; lets call it 14 bore instead....
Guns (big things with crews and carriages) were measured and standard (sort of) long before these pesky handgonnes.

The Brits have been calling them 12-bores for a couple of centuries now. Go ahead and call up H&H or Purdey's and tell them they're wrong.

I shot skeet with my 14-bore this week. What a hoot! 14 gauge "really isn't a thing", so there was no ambiguity or pretension in thinking the correct term at least for English guns is bore.

If the people who made the shotgun in question called it bore then I'll call it bore as well. If they called it gauge then I'll call it gauge. Who am I to change the name of their work?

Many of the old large bore African guns were referred to as 4 bores, 6 bores and then there's the legendary 2 bore.
