I think steel shot is garbage ammo. Anyways I've been looking into other alternatives. I just found this company from USA that makes a copper plated bismuth ammo. There just called BOSS. Seems a reasonable price.

Trying to find some info but its been difficult. Anyone ever use this ammo or know if its sold in Canada.

I'll probably give the complete a call this week

Just sold in the US, is what I was told when I spoke to them last year. I know someone who used it while duck hunting in the US and sang it's praises. Kent cartridge's Bismuth and Tungsten is great stuff, it is pricey but effective.

I heard its brittle comes apart easily. The copper coating is a great idea.

From what I experienced with the one box of it got my hands on I have no qualms with Kent's current bismuth offering, other than local availability. Tungsten matrix might be the best factory lead alternative going when you consider it is compatible with older fixed chokes, if it cost less. Old bismuth was brittle at first but that had largely been sorted out in the early 2000's. Rio bismuth might be the most cost effective option but multiple attempts to contact Rio's distributor here in Canuckistan has resulted in zero responses.

Boss' business model is based in direct sales to the customer cutting out middle men and giving their users the best value for their dollar. Current regulations make that highly difficult for them outside the borders of the USA. I would love see their product available here but it seems unlikely at this time. Perhaps if you could get together with enough friends and order by the pallet load going through an importer wouldn't be cost prohibitive.

Although I actually came of age at the end of lead so steel is my baseline and I have zero difficulties with its use for waterfowl and upland birds. I do like the classics and 20 gauge guns so I appreciate the higher density and lead like shot alternatives.

Have used the Kent Bismuth with good results. Also the old Bismuth Cartridge and Winchester Bismuth.Federal is now making a Bismuth load as well. For those who have grown up using steel.Bismuth will not react like steel. It needs to be used like the old lead loads.Tighter chokes and slower velocities work best with Bismuth.Just like lead loads do.

Have read about the Boss Bismuth, but have never seen any here.Of all the non tox shot that I have tried ,I find Bismuth to be the best.It "brooms up" like the old lead shot use to ,on a duck.

Winchester has listed on their ammunition site, a 1 5/8 ounce Bismuth Xtended Range load, of number 5 that uses Shot Lok.From what I understand, Shot Lok is a resin that helps hold the shot together and protect it in its journey down the barrel. This gives tighter patterns at long distance.Would like to try some of it,but have been unable to find any here.

Now having said the above ,I have never tried the new TSS shot that is suppose to be the cat's meww for waterfowl hunting.Of course most of my guns are older,so I would not want to use that type of shot in them. That and the price of TSS is not to be believed.:)

I talked to the guys at Boss when I first discovered them. They seemed eager to have a distributor in Canada but had yet to find one. Sucks that we're such a small market.

I've used Kent Tungsten-Polymer on geese in Saskatchewan and had great success with it. Felt like the 1990s again.

Is anyone in Canada carrying heavy bismuth would like to get some for my 16 gauge

Prophet River lists two 16ga Bismuth loads...Kent 2.75" 1oz #5 or #6 Bismuth.

Could IRUNGUNS do something like this?

Would be awesome if IRUN Guns could facilitate bringing in BOSS ammo! If that stuff works as advertised I’ll be liquidating my remains lead hunting ammo, using up what steel I have and stocking up on BOSS ammo for waterfowl and upland.

Thanks for the info. You'd think with the technology these days we would've come up with something much better/safer material than steel shot to replace lead.

We have such materials, they just don't meet the requirement you did not name, namely CHEAP.

Also, the technology we have these days is focused on putting a computer in everybodies pocket, we are nowhere near having the kind of technology that would allow us to just add squares to the periodic table, which is the sort of thing it would take to invent a revolutionary new shot material.

I have shot exactly 5 rounds of BOSS shells, the so called “ Shorty” 1 1/4oz of copperplated 5s. They were given to me as a challenge by Ramsey Russell, the challenge was to shoot 5 Canada’s with 5 shells, I had a pretty stellar field lined up and was able too.

What I learned was that just about anything works on Canada’s at 20 yards. The shells are of good quality with decent hulls and primers. They are “high brass” which may help with ejection but really these days is irrelevant. I only got 5 so I never got to pattern them but judging by the Canada’s I shot the patterns were very dense which shouldn’t be a surprise for small, relatively soft( compared to steel) out of Tight chokes.

My understanding is that Covid put a crimp on the Canadian side of things. I would happily purchase use them if they became available, they are good shells, but my main draw is the emphasis the company puts on shooting birds within the shells limits and also the fact they load them in sizes and loads not commonly offered by others. The openly recommend their customers pattern their guns, something that no big company has advertised to my knowledge.

For now I am shooting Kent Bismuth and Hevi-Bismuth, particularly in the 16 and 20. Modern steel is just fine in a 12 if you don’t push it past 40-45 yards. The smaller Bismuth sizes don’t give you any extra killing range but they give you denser patterns at the same ranges as steel. The #5s I shoot out of my 20 don’t give me anymore range than #3 steel but they flatten birds better at ethical distances.
