BOSS System Over-rated?

If you reload, the BOSS system is useless, IMHO. It's good for changing the harmonics of the barrel to suit certain factory ammo by trial and error.

If you reload, you can simply change your loading and fiddle with your charge to get better accuracy.

Also, they have a Boss CR thingy that is the same as the boss but without the ports- not nearly as loud.
 
I had a BOSS in .233WSSM and couldn't beat an 8" group in 60 rds, using different dial-ins. The scope was a Leupold.

When I found out that it would have to be readjusted for each new load, I knew I couldn't continue to waste multiple rounds just sighting it in ( and it would take more than 60rds)....I abandoned the idea and returned it, exchanging it for a regular A-bolt II, .233Rem; a great move. I will NEVER have another BOSS.
 
I have owned one BOSS equipped rifle,but will never own another.I found that I could develop a handload in as many shots as it took to fine tune the BOSS for a given load.
 
As a previous post stated you can get a CR (Conventional Recoil) Boss along with the regular Boss and the noise will be the same as a regular barrel.

You can do all your pre-hunt shooting with good hearing protection and enjoy the reduced recoil of the regular boss and set it for the load you are shooting(there is a chart to get you real close), then switch to the CR Boss and put it at the same setting for hunting.

Don't have any shooting ranges in my area so I am not sure if there are any regulations because of the noise.

I find it makes quite a difference on recoil but if you are looking at a BAR Safari recoil shouldn't be much of a problem with the semi-auto.

If you have a accurate gun the boss won't improve it much and if you hand load fiddling to get the right load is half the fun anyways.

The old KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) saying comes to mind when hunting as it never seems to fail that if something can go wrong it will at the very worst time.
 
It does not matter what you are shooting at a range... it you are doing it without ear protection you deserve to go deaf.

If you are hunting without ear protection it does not matter if you are shooting a Boss or not. Behind the rifle for a couple of shots hunting is no big deal. If you are beside the rifle it is considerable worse.

After being around shooting and shooting for over 60 years I have suffered no noise related hearing loss. I use hearing protection at ranges. I had my ears tested a few times and the slightly hearing loss I have is not in the shooting induced area, it is a hereditary high frequency loss.
 
Just use the Boss-CR and you won't notice the noise, sounds like any other rifle on the range. I like the BOSS, with heavier factory loads in .30-06 I was able to tighten my groups considerably by dialing it out to 9.0

In over 30 years of hunting without hearing protection,my ears have rang exactly once.That one time was after firing my 7mmremmag with BOSS once,and my ears rang for several minutes.I have fired my 300 ultramags without a BOSS many times over the years,and my ears have never rang.

I have slight shooting-related hearing loss (I'm 29), and every time anything louder than a .22LR goes off, my ears ring. I need to use hearing protection (electronic) all the time when shooting. I have constant ringing in my left ear, and it's difficult to pick up conversations in places with lots of background noise. Shooting related hearing loss BLOWS and it is a total pain in the arse.

While I know it's the 'norm' in older guys (and even some young buddies of mine) to shoot without hearing protection. IMHO in ANYTHING other than a hunting situation (and even then) shooting without hearing protection is not an option. Hearing loss is cumulative, and with the comfort and cost of modern hearing protection, there is no excuse for shooting without it.
 
Hunting often requires the senses to be sharpe, and especially the sense of hearing, and although hearing protection is cheap, hearing protection that allows normal hearing prior to the shot is not cheap. The boss or muzzle brakes even make little guns sound like bombs.

I use Peltor SportTac's with a 19NRR - got them for right around $100 from The Shooting Edge. I've worn them 100% of the time while shooting ever since. Actually, you hear BETTER than normal - it's pretty cool to hear pheasants running on the ground in front of you.

I can think of waaaay worse things that I've blown $100 on, but I can't think of many better. If I had these years back, I wouldn't have the hearing damage I have today. Money well spent.

Actually I have tried those very same Peltors and I think that they sounded like a cheap stereo. I too have suffered hearing loss because of shooting and now when at the range, I wear custom made plugs and often ear muffs over the plugs when I am shooting something big. In spite of my hearing loss, I process game or hunting related sounds better with my bare ears hanging out.
If I thought that $100.00 would make me hear better and protect my ears, I would spend 10 times that much. Good hearing costs more than that. Way more! Sorry to Hi Jack a perfectly good BOSS Bashing thread and turn into one on hearing protection.
 
I'm not a reloader so I actually really like the BOSS. For those who use factory ammo, I think the BOSS system is an asset as it really does allow you to tighten your groups for individual loads.
 
I have just sighted in a new BAR MK II Safari In 30-06 , ( no Boss )

Using regular off the shelf Winchester 150gr power points it put 5 shots touching at 100 yds !! you can cover them with a loonie ..sub MOA .
I was really Impressed as this was My first attempt with it and that was using factory ammo ...and it was able to match A Browning A bolt ...not bad for a semi .

A Boss system In my mind would have all the downside of wieght , noise ,cost and very little upside ..or in this case un needed .

If you can simplify things ..all the better ...less to go wrong on your big hunt .
 
I think the Boss system is smoke and mirrors. I think it is something to play with before you address the real problem, like your barrel crown is damaged, or the guard screws are loose, or the bedding is incorrect, or the scope mounts are loose. I knew a guy who had one on a custom 300 WBY, with 28 inches of barrel, he shot 150 gr bullets as fast as possible. It was so loud that even with ear protection, I could not shoot at the next bench at the range.
