Both my pump shotguns release trigger out of battery

I'm not sure if this is normal - I don't shoot my shotguns much.

I saw a video yesterday of a person showing his trigger would release with the pump not fully forward. So, I decided to try it with my:

Weatherby PA-08 12ga pump
Uzkon AS40 12ga pump

*Both* will have the trigger click without the pump (and thus bolt) fully forward.

BUT... I put my finger into the ejection port on the face of the bolt where the firing pin hole is, pulled the trigger, and I DID NOT feel the firing pin against my finger at all. Which would lead me to believe it wouldn't fire an actual shell.

Go grab your pump shotgun(s), move the bolt foward but before it gets all the way to the chamber, try pulling the trigger. Does it go click?

Is this normal?

First of all, don't put your finger in front of the firing pin. If it does make contact, it'll punch a nice dirty hole through your finger and it will get infected.

Secondly... so what? Many guns can "fire" with the bolt out of battery, however, as long as it's designed in such a way that the firing pin cannot strike the primer until the guns is at least mostly closed, you're good to go. All #### on opening bolt actions will fire with the bolt out of battery, but pulling the trigger will "shoot the bolt closed", ie. it will be in full lockup when pin hits primer, though with likely not enough energy to do anything.

As for being normal, sure, why not? It may not be the best design, but it's perfectly safe and functional.

My fabarm does it too, the firing pin doesn't go forward at all.

And even if a firing pin does hit your finger, you will feel it, but it won't punch any holes in your skin...

Thanks - it must be normal for this to happen (about the bolt - not the finger part :) ) Any firing pin sharp enough to push through someone's finger is a pretty weird pin... Hell, it would be punching holes in the soft primers! hehe
