hunting coyotes specifically.
Sick and tired of searching for a "bolt action" 'yote gun, when I know I want a semi.

Not going to be shooting corrosive: non-corrosive only.
Changing the stock to a new ATI Strikeforce Stock, for the obvious tactikool look.

Yes? No?

why not? so long as it shoots accurate enough at the range your hunting at then theres no reason why it wont get the job done. That ATI stock may cost you some accuracy over the factory wood however. Corrosive fmj surplus will work just fine but commercial ammo will generally group tighter. Do er up!

An SKS dosent group tight enough to spend money on a scope, choate mount and deflector...

Get some Tech sights and leave her stock...

SKS's have successfully made clean kills at my deer camp, and I have used mine to hunt yotes and deer where the shots are under 75 yards. My sks is dead accurate at 50yards with no scope so where is the problem? :)

My wife shot a 7-year old cow moose with an AK-47 in 1988. 3 shots to the lungs, and it was DOA. I got a few bears with the same gun. If it's good enoug for moose and bear, gotta be good enough for dogs.

get some soft point ammo and have at em the prvi is good. and hornady has some that they have at lebaron right now with a hunting bullet.

no reason to waste teh money on hunting ammo. And at $400 for a crate of 1200, you can shoot non-corrosive much more than commercial. Once you put a hole in the yote, it will die. I would suggest that you take out shoulders, if you want to shoot with FMJ milsurp. Just punching a hole in them can mean that you have to find a wounded animal in the brush. All of us using FMJ usually go for a shoulder shot.

My SKS's are scoped and shoot norinco silver box to less than 2 inches at 100yds. Prvi costs almost $1 a round out here. No need to throw all that brass away. FMJ will get it done just fine.

Sure, why not? The cartridge has enough energy to kill a deer for a bit past 100 yards. I don't find that SKS rifles are generally capable of shooting MOA, but a lung shot in a deer at a 100 paces should not be a big task. Its a fine gun for a bush rifle, but for longer shots and accuracy, there are better options.

Some people doubt the accuracy of PRVI ammunition

There are many fellas up here who have taken lots of moose deer and bear with there sks. This one guy had a fancy bolt gun 300wsm I think with a big Leopold on top out hunt then over came a fella packing a sks and said "what u packing all that fer" . If your wondering the guy with the sks got a nice 4 year old bull moose

I have more than one SKS that shoots well enough to hunt with and would not hesitate to use them on yote or deer. I'm thinking about taking my XCR in x39 hunting moose calf this year. I have a box of wolf 154gr SP and some 123gr SST I may use for this unless someone has a better suggestion on what bullet to use on calf. Actual experience with load for moose anyone?

I would use an SKS for deer, but sorry not coyotes!

Mounting optics on the thing is a pain in the ass, and the range needed to hunt coyotes is gonna be difficult to achieve good groups with the average sks and optics set up for one.

I guess it depends what kind of hunting you are doing, but I assume you are thinking about hunting over a bait pile, or a decoy, and calling. If this is the case you need a gun that will perform well out to 200, even 300 yards at least.

If you are pushing bush it would work fine, but a .223 has less recoil and will provide for quicker and easier follow up shots which I assume is the reason you want a semi.

I have owned a couple sks's and I wouldn't use it for coyotes.

I've had good luck shooting 'yotes with an SKS. Just nuisance work but shooting at a running coyote with nail drivers typically is hard to do as well.
SKS's rock. IMO they are the new .303 sporters, about one in four people who shoot (that I know) have one and love it.

We here in Bantario can't hunt with ball ammunition (FMJ). Hunting rounds are expanding softpoint or you could get yourself into some trouble with the Yogies. That's not to say we can't pull the bullets from the surplus ammo and replace the FMJ with a softpoint:D....way cheaper than a $1 a round:eek:.

the coyotes in my area are easily spooked, seems to me that we only ever get shots at beyond a 100 yards...not saying the cartridge doesnt have the energy, just wondering if you and the gun can be accurate enough to be humane...
