Whats the hot 700 set-up for high quality 10ish shot 30-06 mags? Cost, availability, and ease of inletting aren't huge concerns, but maybe a little. I just want something that I never have to think about again.

While we are on the subject, does anyone know if AI or similar mags can be made to work in a M70 .458 Win Mag?

"...10ish shot 30-06 mags..." Suggest you read the law again. A mag like that is evil all by itself.
"...Whats the hot 700 set-up..." That mean how much or how to?
"...made to work in a M70..." That'd require a complete redesign of the rifle.

Not in a manually operated repeater, unless the mag itself was designed for an evil black gun.

That means the one that works, with slight consideration for ease of inletting, and a preference for little to no metal work if that's possible. Most of the aftermarket set-ups seem to take the AI mags, but thats about all I know about them.

I was hoping for just a change to aftermarket bottom metal, and a magnum sized magazine that could digest a straight case. Don't know if that's easy or unlikely.

I installed some ptg stuff in my 280a.i. that I built, the stock is a grey bull precision. There was some inletting to do in order to get it to fit as this stuff has a little bigger inlet then factory, mine uses a 5 shot ai mag which works alright. Personaly I shoot most of my stuff single shot anyway.

Thanks.
I tend to shoot my precision rifles single shot too, and many of them are single shot. This is a multiple target rapid fire application, and I thought the tactical guys would have more experience with such things than the sporting arms guys. The PTG stuff sounds alright. Is it only inletting or does the action need to be opened?

I have a PTG DBM for a short action, very good quality. The long action version for the M70 should work fine with your .458 Win Mag as the AI mags are designed for .300 Win Mag which has the same case dimensions, may have to mess with the feed lips but maybe not. Not sure about options for the .30-06 though.

Why not a 308? Way easier to make work and mags/DBMs readily available.

I can offer CDI and PTG DBM. AI type mags.

I am unaware of any mag specific to the -06 family of cases. You may have to muck around a lot to make something work if it can work at all.

Let me know...

I personally think HS is the way to go, they are typically more expensive, but I was very impressed with the drop in, no adjusting whatsoever and perfect function. Very solid built, and I believe they have 5 and ten shot options. I switched it over just before my OSA sniper/precision match and was thankful I did in the rapid follow up portion and the agony matches. Good luck, PS I remember seeing a set in the precision EE for parts, may have to scroll back a few pages.

I believe what people are doing is using the .300 Mag mag and changing the feed lips. Could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

The reason for using a M700 30-06 over a .308 is mostly because I already have a couple of them, plus a good supply of ammo at a location where it was relatively expensive to stockpile. I'd rather improve what I have going instead of switching horses completely at this point.

Unless the lip material is lengthen, when you bend them in, they might go "lower". This may need the DBM to be inlet deeper then desired so the bolt can pick up the case from the mag.

Maybe it can be made to work. maybe a big PITA.

Yes I use the 300 win mag

Read the law. You can have as many rounds in your bolt gun as you wish!!!!!!

Alpha Mag makes a 30-06 specific magazine for long-action AI bottom metal. Apparently the Alpha One is standard issue for the US Military's M40A3 rifles.

Hey, now we might really be getting somewhere.:D I've seen enough references to modding AI mags to believe it can be done, but a specific mag is rather reassuring. A 3.600" mag is an additional bonus, not strictly necessary but welcome none the less. At least one of the rifles shot better when I could approach or reach the lands with the original floorplate assembly and I'm happy to take anything I can get.
