So to refinish the stock of a spanish sxs i had to take the action apart as i didnt want to ruin the case colors on the action. While the wood is drying i thought id put the bolts back into the action so i dont loose anything. Now the bottom plate wont sit back into the action. Am i dumb and missing something obvious or is it normal for the bottom plate to have to be hammered back into place? After i removed the trigger guard it did take a fair amount of tapping to pop the bottom out. I just dont want to bend anything

Something is out of place holding it from seating... look closely and see what parts are not meshing...the trigger/safety/selector is a prime suspect.

These are often a tight fit. Make sure the safety lever is starting into the slot in button. When you are putting the stock back on that is also the main snag. Make sure safety operates before tightening screws too much.

If nothing is out of place lightly tapping with a plastic hammer may help

I put the wood back in place and it still wouldnt lay flat so after a morning scotch i whacked it woth the butt of the screwdriver. Its rubber coated. It took 3 whacks but its in flush and the safety works. It cocks and fires on empty cases so i think its ready for pattern testing. I also shortened the barrels and added a new front bead
