Bought a gun that bubba got too. Now I need a little advice so I can properly fix bubba's handy work instead of adding to it. I plan on allowing some money for gunsmithing but am quite able to do much of the work myself. BTW the gun is a Valmet Finnish Lion in .22 LR. Have no idea how it shoots but do know that it does function correctly. Here is some problems that I know exist:
- Improperly drilled and tapped scope mount holes
How would these be filled? Would they blue properly if filled with weld or a bolt that was ground flush
- Missing 1 action screw and 1 trigger guard screw.
Anyone know where to source parts like this or would I be better to modify an existing screw or retap the action for a new size that is available
- Finish is finished
I guess I would need to reblue, can this hurt the accuracy if the barrel is not plugged properly when hot blueing. (I found a recipe for home hot blueing on the net
)
- Gun was bedded and it looks like too much wood was removed at the back of the action then filled with epoxy (I think...still waiting to here from seller on that)
Hoping it still has wood under the mess I think I am seeing but it may be a bad pic.
- Previous owner was going to rechamber to a match chamber (not sure if it needs it or not).
How is a new chamber cut...not that I want to try just wondering how it is done.
- No sights or scope mounts
I would like to be able to be able to switch back and forth what do I put for a mount? Where do I buy target sights?
I can do wood refinishing but to properly splice in a piece if needed Is probably beyond my ability (too make it look pretty anyway). I have the tools and equipment to strip and polish any of the metal parts but do not have blueing tanks. I can drill and tap new holes.
Any advice would be appreciated as well as the name and contact info for a smith who can do this work for me.
Cheers
