So I've wanted a marlin 1894 in 44 mag to go with my ruger super black hawk for a while now. I heard lots of horror stories about the new production ones and did my research. I stumbled into cabelas the other day and they had one on the rack. Last one in inventory. I looked it over but couldn't cycle the action due to their "policy". I couldn't see anything wrong with it (checked for crooked sights, missing screws, tube magazine not centered, drooping barrel etc), price was right and the wood actually looked not to bad so I bought it.

Took it home, I took it completely appart. I should mention I'm pretty a nal about guns. I couldn't find any burrs, rough spots, machining marks, tool marks etc. Nothing. I honestly couldn't find a single thing wrong with it. I cleaned it, watched a movie and cycled it 400 times.

I took it to the range today and grabbed some ammo I had loaded for my ruger. 240gr jhp, 22gr 2400, mixed brass. 50m iron sights, shots number 2, 3 and 4. First shot was low and left which got rid of anything left in the barrel from cleaning it last night. I was able to hit the gong at 200m 10/10 with these loads. Also shot bunny fart cast keith I use for plinking and rang the gong with those as well.

I honestly can't complain about anything. It's smooth, feeds swc, the end of the chamber is radiused which i'm assuming helps with this, as well as my full house jhp loads. I have some molds coming and will post how that goes when I can do some casting.

I'm sure there are bad ones out there but this must be a newer one (was inspected jan 1, 2013 but that doesn't really tell me much as to when it was made), and it worked out for me. Just wanted to share.

I have one of these too, although mine is at least a dozen years old [bought it from a work pal 10 years ago]. I had a few problems with it...the feeding was wonky and would often jam up, but after a disassembly and a bit of smoothing it's now working great [I probably should have cycled mine a few hundred times like you...].

Try shooting .44SP loads through it...it feels like a .22!

Worked on RemMarlin a bit ago, machining was quite good, Bbl needed to be tightened a bit to Center sight, Rear stock was a bit loose, shimmed a bit, to tighten. Chamber has a rough spot , Ejects okay though. Installed big loop lever and cycled several hundred times as well, Shoots good.
