Bought a new hunter/target shooter

WEll I "pulled the trigger" and bought a Savage in 300 win mag. I wanted it for moose and but also my range is setup for 600 yards. This year I want to become very comfortable/proficient with this gun so I plan on shooting gongs and paper to these longer ranges at the club. I am not looking to compete but if I see an animal at a longer distance I want the ability to make a clean ethical shot. Hand loading will become involved later, after I gather the cash for all the equipment to hand load. So to start off I want to make the gun comfortable to shoot several boxes in a day. I plan on upgrading the factory butt pad (suggestions??) and also adding a muzzle break as well.

What have you guys done for recoil pads?

Opinions on muzzlebreaks??

Is there a recoil pad that will work well enough so I can avoid the expense of a muzzle break install??

I have shot a 300 win mag before and it wasn't bad until the third or fourth mag. I do not want to develop a flinch so before the weather is right for shooting again I want to have my rig ready to shoot. Thanks!!!!!!!!
 
Will you be bench shooting, any reason for not getting a lead sled over a muzzle break?

I shoot an accustocked .325 WSM, and it isn't really pleasant but I seem to have gotten used to it, didn't really consider an aftermarket butt pad.
 
I think you will get more benefit out of a break then a different butt pad, mine seems fairly cushy, but I'm hesitant to recommend the muzzle break, I loathe shooting at the range next to someone who has one, would rather have hot brass from some one else's sks bouncing off me then be next to a non magnum with a fierce muzzle break, and the noise increase makes me want to hunt with ear plugs in my pocket, but it may be the most effective reduction in recoil for you.

The accustocked I think has kind of a strange shape in the stock where the butt pad is connected, maybe have a look and see if it will cause any issues, if not then I'd suggest trying a pachymer pad first as its quicker and cheaper then a muzzle break, if that doesn't do anything for you then at least you don't have a lot of money into it.
 
Muzzle break would come off for hunting, one shot one kill. Money isnt a huge concern but if I do not have to modify the gun I won't. I also do not want to use a slip on pad since it changes the LOP of the gun so shooting in the field without it would be different and its just another piece of kit to worry about losing. The shooting benches at the range are spaced out quite far so brakes do not cause a huge issue.
