Bought a new Ruger GP-100 4" stainless today

I have a 6" barrelled GP-100 and a 4.2" SP-101...the longer barrel on my GP-100 lets me shoot tiny little groups at 25 yards, but the SP-101 doesn't do too badly either! Both of them got lighter Wolff hammer springs and the lighter Wolff trigger return spring, as well as a stainless washer on either side of the hammer...and a little bit of polishing. The SP-101 also needed Hogue grips, the stock ones left my pinkie dangling, lol... Congrats on your purchase, with a little tinkering those Rugers are sweet revolvers!
I have the Ruger GP100 stainless in 4.2". What a fun gun when shooting hot loads. Here it is with a beast of a gun my 5" 460V. When shooting full power loads in either gun it never ceases to put a smile on my face.
You have a pair of beauties. A wheel gun is a real gun. You can put a smile on a face every day, With them hot loads LOL
The 4.2" barreled GP100 is one gun I have been thinking about for my wife and almost 8 year old son.
My guy has been shooting a stainless Ruger Bearcat 11 in 22LR for a couple years now = we have been thinking up selling it to fund the GP100 and it would be perfect for my wife because it is so much smaller in comparison than my 4.25" barreled Ruger SRH in 454 Casull.

Shooting 38 spl is a great way to introduce a bigger gun to a new shooter or just for fun it self.. how's the accuracy in the Ruger with 38 ?

I have only been handling my GP-100 a lot. Not firing yet, but I think I'll have to remove the mould flashing from the Hogue grips, it is rubbing a spot on the inside of my middle finger between the second joint and the knuckle.

I had this problem and it was way worse when firing (I don't know why gun mfg's are still trying to make a "one size fits all" figer grooved grip, every hand is different) and I corrected it by putting Hogue wood grips that don't have the finger grooves. They feel sooo much better, better than any handgun grip I own actually, they look good too.
bought one 3 years ago.......cylinder kept jamming after about 50 rounds and would not open....had to use extreme force....went home pissed off cleaned it...happened again and again....all the gunsmith said is they have really tight tolarances...but never heard of this issue.....sold it right away pure garbage....never had that problem with any smith
You probably just had something stuck between the cylinder and extractor star, just a tiny particle in there will jam up any revolver, one of the reasons anyone who says revolvers are more reliable than semi-autos is talking out of their ass.
I got a KGP100 a few months ago as a backup to my Smith 686.
Both are fine revolvers and I am trying to train for using in competition. The Smith is "finished" a bit better with smoother edges. The Ruger feels more edge with sharper edges. For me, this is completely immaterial. Both are very accurate shooters.
I find the Ruger to be actually better at shooting fast double action since the double action pull is softer and faster. The Smith single action pull is the best.
One trouble I did have with the Ruger was some jamming mentioned in a few articles above. I got this when I fired about 40 rounds of magnum as fast as possible. The gun was heating up and then the cylinder froze. I had to stop firing and push the cylinder out (and it was hard). I suspected that the heat was expanding the front cylinder face and of course the forcing cone was getting really hot. I checked the cylinder gap visually and sure enough it was much tighter than the Smith and Wesson. I could not fit a piece of paper in the gap even when the Ruger was cold.
So I took the GP100 to gunsmith and he widened the gap and all is OK. I did talk to the Ruger support shop in Quebec and they explained that Ruger has a newer plant going and some of the gun fitters are not completely trained up like the old hands. The offered to fix it all up for free, but I was faster to go local and pay 80 bucks or so.

The 4.2" GP-100 in regular dress or Match Champion in the perfect gun for IDPA SSR Division and we thank Ruger for making both models, both of which fit the division so well. From 38spl factory to wild .357 Mag eyebrow singeing loads this gun only asks, "Is that all you got?". With the triple lock up design they are outstanding revolvers, easy to field strip and with very good triggers that get only better with use.
Congrats on your purchase, you and your wife will not be sorry you bought the GP-100.
My 686 no dash sits as back up to my Ruger for matches. There is not an ounce of difference in either guns trigger.

I love mine, and it loves Geco 158gr .357mag, you just can't argue with 5" groups at 50 meters. Did a trigger job and put some Wilson Combat springs in it.
I quite enjoy shooting the full house loads like Federal AE 158gr jacketed soft point.
