You guys are like crack dealers - all these posts with these beautiful old revolvers, I just had to have a taste.

She's not the prettiest girl at the dance, but she's got personality :D (and supposed to have a perfect bore and lock up like a bank vault). Just made the deal today so it'll be a couple weeks before I get my grubby hands on it.

Webley MkI that's had the cylinder cut back for 45 ACP (I know not to use factory ammo in it - only light loads). Grips are replacements, and it has what appears to be some sort of finish over the metal that has started to flake off (kind of looks like pitting in some of the pics but it's not).

I don't think I got all that great of a deal on it, but something about it just drew me in. What would the going price on one in this condition be?

I've read that some of these were set up to use 45 Auto Rim cartridges better than 45ACP in moonclips - anyone happen to have a single piece or 45AR they might be willing to part with so I can check when the revolver arrives (and does anyone know of a dealer stocking 45AR)?
 
Hey thats a good Gun! I seen that one on AA.
I think theres a company that makes Repo grips for the MKI as well as the MKII MKIII Ect but the MKI grips are slightly different.
Course there nothing wrong with wood grips but the Repo ones look more like the orignals.
I like useing Moon clips and 45 ACP as its way faster to reload.
The moon clips the full ones are like speed loaders. ;)

I never tryed the AR stuff.
 
I bookmarked a spot that has repro grips (found it - Vintage Gun Grips) for about $30. I'll see how the wood feels in your hand, but you're right, the originals look better.
Think it was an OK price dingus or did I get hosed?

No you didnt get Hosed! They go for twice that in the US sometimes it just depends.
If it had Orignal grips i woulda maby bought it.

And Yes to the other poster its still Antique in 45 ACP

EDIT*If i bought that gun id get the Wood grips Checked and Stain them a very Dark colour almost black.

Yes it is still antique 45acp is not on the list . also 45 auto rim works well in my friends MKII and wholesale sports used to carry it they still may .
 
Yeah, IF the wood grips stay they're gonna get stained dark - they're too contrasting now.
Did some looking around and Shooter's Choice has 45AR brass listed - only a couple bucks more a hundred than 45ACP. If I can I think I'll probably go that route. The moon clips would be faster loading, but for some reason just don't seem "right" to me.
 
So why does the AR brass work?
How thick is the AR brass rim?
Cause with some of these 45 Acp conversions ive heard that shortened 45 colts will fire cause the Rim is thicker than 455.
Id try a Primed shortened 45 Colt before i bought any AR brass.
Then you can load up the Proper Dia webley 265 gr HB 455 Bullets

45 colts rim is .060 thick

they work on some 45 ACP conversions depending on how much Metal was removed from the back of your guns cylinder.
 
Hmm.... I only have 5 or 6 hundred 45 Colt brass, but I might be able to sacrifice one.
Although the rim on the 45AR is about half as thick again at .090

Guess I'll just wait and see how close a shave they gave it.
 
45 auto rim is thicker on the rim than 45 colt 45 colt is .060 45 auto rim is .090 during WWI both colt and Smith& Wesson manufactured revolvers for 45auto using half moon clips these revolvers were then sold to civilian market after the war in 1920 Peters cartridge CO. introduced a rimmed version of this cartridge thus eliminating the need for the moon clips . 45Auto Rim was made for this purpose but as is was made for colt and S&W witch came factory for 45auto with moon clips a person may want to measure the head space on there webley to make sure you have enough room
 
Well one thing about 45 ACP is the Bullets are like .451 or .452 so alot of gass blows by the bullets when fired, looseing Veloicty in the 455 bored Webley.

If however you expand the case mouths of the 45 ACP cases and load 455 Dia or at Least .454 Dia lead bullets this Blow by is stoped.

Sure makes for a ugly looking Cartridge tho.
45 Colt and 455 Cases are the same Dia so if a shortened 45 Colt will fire your better off.

Looking at your Cylinder to frame gap im guessing you will need the AR brass.
But its easy to try a 45 Colt.

Nice gun! Looks like it is in great shape. You can get the moon clips and tool for not much money. Something fun about having 1500 grains of lead in a clip!

plastic replacement grips are available for the mkI , not great quality but if you don't mind the fitting and sanding they work fine.
