Well it finally happened, decided to buy my first AR. Not a fan of the DA/Norcs and I have a ton of Surplus 7.62x39 kicking around, so only made sense to pick up one the gen2 NEAs in x39 w/ 14.5" barrel.

My plan is to update this thread with my experience with this rifle, good or bad. Also what it is capable of in the hands of a novice, with various optics and ammo.

I'll have an unboxing video up shortly, if anyone has any specific questions about the rifle let me know and I'll do my best to help you out.

I've read all the hate regarding this rifle, still didn't sway me from buying it. Seems most vendors are sold out so I'm hoping some other owners can come out of the shadows and share some info regarding their experience.

Please don't comment unless you have something constructive to add, would really like to focus specifically on the rifle and not its related history/politics.

Here it is!

What kind of surplus are you going to use?
IF the answer is Romanian, order a Wolff extra power hammer spring from Brownells now. It will ignite those hard combloc primers.

I've got one!!!. I'm second owner, its my first ar. I ran it in a three gun match and other than mag issues (xcr 10 rounders) it was stellar. I've since put an aimpoint pro on it and it will ring a gong consistently at 200 yards.

Yes Romanian accounts for the lions share of my surplus ammo - I've heard of this issue when running the x39 upper on a standard lower. What is your experience?

I've run a few 7.62 AR's with NEA upper components and you'll want this spring around. Could be that your lower has a heavier spring but I'd just get one in case to avoid downtime.

I've had three (sold them just cause), and will own them again. NEA's that I've had hands on with, and friends that have had them - zero issues. YMMV. Heavy Hammers springs are needed for some surplus.

How do the DI systems take the corrosive ammo in an AR?

When I asked NEA about corrosive ammo this is what they told me:

"Most of the ammo we use to test the rifles are corrosive. It will run fine. Following standard cleaning procedures is recommended but our nitriding treatment will prevent the barrel and other components from degrading while using corrosive ammo."

Bummer to see that it came dinged up. I'm surprised to see mismatch in the upper and lower finish, mine were never like this. (maybe the upper and lower are different batches / pieced together afterward, but still).

Welcome to the club! I've been shooting it since Nov 2014. I run Dominion Arms/LCW through it. It's quite accurate. I have magpul BUIS and they work great. There isn't a range trip that it does not come along!

For the price point you have made a good decision and should not be discouraged by some of the negative comments. NEA makes a decent product for what you intend to use it for.

Also you can expect to receive good warranty support if the marks on the hand guard bother you. You will eventually get dings and scratches the more you fire the rifle and my preference is a well used look AR over a show piece any ways.

Have fun.

Corrosive in an AR is easier to clean than you might think. Hot water/compressed air/CLP.
Yep, the easiest semi to clean.
Pop the rear pin, put in link and bore guide, pour hot water down the bore, then clean bore as per normal while the BCG sits in hot water.
Blow dry the water out , lube and assemble.

This is the setup I use.

Was at an Arizona range other day and fellow was firing his 458 AR conversion. I watched and the kick was not that bad and he was banging bulls at 100yds very consistent. I was using 5.56 Rock River with 22" SS barrel and 70grain custom loads. No one else there with ARs had 7.62 conversions. Guy with 458 had feed issues with the 5.56 mag. Bullet catches on the front feeding in. He is going to file the problem area down on the mag.

UPDATE

Stripped the rifle down tonight, cleaned, lightly oiled and reassembled. I'm quite impressed with the AR design, first time having one apart - will be a breeze to clean after corrosive ammo.

I also mounted my Bushnell scope on Millet tactical rings. Hoping this was a good buy...
