Well I just bought my first AR.

Just got off the phone with the RCMP regarding the transfer. We will see how long it takes this time. Last transfer took 10 business days...hopefully its faster this time....kinda antsy to get out and shoot it.

I picked up an unfired Stag Arms 3G with some extra goodies.

Now I just have to decide on some optics. I was thinking something with 1-4 zoom, illumination isnt required. Something light would be nice. Im hoping to stick under $500 so that means either used, or a cheaper optic.

We will see.

Congrats on a great choice. Stag builds a great rifle that will give you years of top notch service. But, don't make the mistake of putting a cheap optic on it. Leupold offers several very good low variable power scopes in their Mark AR, VX-III and MK 4 lines that are ideal for your stated needs. Just hunt vendor sales or keep an eye out for a good used example. The $500 limit might be a little tight for new, but it will go a lot further in the used market, and if you have to save for an extra month or two, you won't regret it.

Congrats! welcome to the AR club. Lots of great options below 500 for 1-x range optics. Bushnell and Nikon make some decent 1-4/2-7x optics. I went with a Nikon Prostaff 2-7 for around $200. You can spend more but it really depends on what you need it for. For casual range duty and plinking the Nikon was good enough for me. On my CQB rig, I went with a vortex PST 1-4 with illuminated reticle a bit pricier but is built to take the rougher handling in CQB competitions (plus the unconditional warranty helps reduce the worry should I mess it up somehow). One of the main decisions is do you need to adjust the windage and elevation frequently to compensate for changing target distances or are you okay with a covered, less accessible adjustments. Some scopes have ballistic reticles that provide points in the scope that show where the bullet will hit for a given range. These are guidelines however and will depend on the ammo you use and the length of your AR barrel. The more control/adjustment you need the higher the price will be. Good luck and enjoy the rifle!

put some money aside for a decent compensator.
The factory one on the 3G has been known to drive the muzzle downwards

Otherwise its a nice rifle.
happy shooting

Yea, Ive read its a lousy break. Only downside to this rifle is because it came out of the states the break is riveted in. Im sure it wouldnt be hard to remove it should the need arise.

24 hours in BC!

I have a Bushnell AR 1-4x with the throwdown lever on one of my ARs. Pretty good compromise for CQB and works very well at range out to 500m. It comes in about your pricepoint.

Canadian Tactical Cowboy Supplies (site sponsors) carry the Primary Arms optics. I've bought a few in the past couple of months and they're a great deal. Check them out too... They have a 1-6x that should fill the bill!
