Sig Sauer Mosquitoe. Hope I didn't make a mistake. I figured I'd get a .22 just to get the feel of shooting gun, not to mention it's a hell of a lot cheaper to shoot....and I hope to be shooting a lot. I figure my next gun will either be a Glock 17, or Smith and Wesson MP 9mm.

What do you guys think? Am I making the right choices?

congrats but...
I hope yours can cycle cheap ammo, mine didnt and was sent back.
If it does your lucky if it doesnt then your paying 6+ times the price of regular ammo. If that doesnt bother you then you have a nice accurate gun.

I've heard too many good things... you must have made a good decision! :D
The few bugs were worked out of the earlier models.
Have fun! .22 is definitely the way to go!!

Well, that's what I was worried about...after I came back from the gunshop I starting googling the Mosquito (which is obviously what I should have done BEFORE I bought it), and I noticed a lot of people talking about how it was picky about what type of ammo it would take. That reassures me when you say they worked out the bugs of the earlier models. Thanks.

What types of ammo would and wouldn't yours take?

Basically all the regular and high velocity ammo. Ex. remington, winchester, american eagle.
They say that the only ammo that works properly is the CCI mixi mag, and their rep states the same thing. Too bad they dont tell you that before you purchase it. If you dont mind the extra cost then its a nice gun.
I couldnt justify the extra cost, it defeats the purpose.
CCI box of 50 is $10

Here's a box of 50 $6.49...I might be able to live with that...if it's the right stuff.

Personally I think .22's suck and will likely never buy one...why not just buy a BB gun? I would have started at 9mm and gone up from there. I was forced to shoot the 'club' 22's when on probation and that was enough of that!

I just bought a Mosquito. I also bought EVERY SINGLE TYPE of ammo I could find in .22.

My highly unscientific findings so far are.....

Everything bad you have read about this gun being picky with ammo is true. However, it does like CCI Mini Mag's. I bought 4 boxes of 50 and only ran one box through it with 1 jam. ( Note - that was with the original WHITE spring installed. The white spring is apparently for lower velocity ammo). It did not like ANYTHING that was not copper plated.

I will do a complete write up when I go the the range for a day and test all ammo on both springs. I will say that so far, I'm not impressed with the gun, Period.

Congrats on the gun purchase, and wicked CGN handle. I was running an instance one day with a group that turned out to be gold farmers, so they got the 3 or 4 LJs from me, the 60 hunter who then feigned death. They finally got it and booted me, but man was it fun while it lasted.

Mosquito is an excellent gun.
Guy at my range uses one and it runs flawlessly with Remington Yellow jackets bulk packs.

People get some bad habits starting with more gun than they can handle. That being said, not all need to start with a .22 lr
My GF, Daughter, hunting buddy etc. all had a lot less experience with shooting needed to start with a .22 and still enjoy it.
In fact I regularly shoot my .22 revolver as well as my 9mm. Couple hundred rounds out of both every time I hit the range

I would be very interested to hear that.

I'm beginning to think that if I use the right ammo (and the CCI Mini-mags aren't TOO bad, price-wise) and keep it good and clean, everything should be fine.

I actually sent an email to Sig last night and got a response this morning...here's what they said, in case anyone else is thinking of getting one:

"Thank you for your email and inquiry.

The design of the Mosquito has improved considerably! I don't know the specifics about what was done overseas to fix the early issues with the gun, but we get very few back. The majority of what we do get back is due to user error in cleanliness, lubrication, ammunition and assembly after field stripping.

The largest number of complaints were extraction issues, which was resolved with proper lubrication, correct orientation of the recoil spring and better ammunition.

These trouble shooting tips solve the majority of complaints:

Make sure that the white recoil spring is installed correctly. It is not outlined in the owner's manual, but the narrow end of the spring MUST be on the guide rod first...pointing towards the rear of the gun. If it is not, this will cause feeding, extraction and firing issues.

There is a lubrication port on the right side of the slide for the extractor, be sure you add a drop of lube in this hole every hundred rounds or so. Make sure the gun is very clean.

Mosquito’s are ammo sensitive and need to be regularly cleaned and properly lubricated.

Be sure to use factory recommend ammo (CCI Mini-Mags, Winchester Super-X, Remington Golden Bullet etc...). "

Hey Leroy

I own a Mosquito as well and I am quite happy with the gun. It DOES work with cheap ammo as well. The best and only rounds I use are Remington Thunderbolts. I get bricks (500 rounds) of it at my local store for just over $20.00. That's $2.00/box and the gun will fire and cycle them 99% of the time. AND I'm using the heavier recoil spring on them as well.

The bullets are lead and the powder burn's a little "dirty", so you will need to keep the gun fairly clean and run a metal brush throught the bore every couple of cleanings as it will lead up.

Don't get discouraged! You are going the exact same route as me. My second handgun just arrived and it's a S&W M&P9 and it's an awesome gun too!

Let me know if you have any more questions!

I started with airguns and then got a 9mm as my first handgun. .22 wasn't much different from an airgun for me too... But several handguns later I ended up buying a .22 pistol. Why? to same money on ammo; shooting centerfires gets expensive! Plus .22 is good to go back to the basics and relearn a few things if you pick up some bad habits along the way ;)

about the Mosquito I don't own one but the one I've shot was pretty unreliable (even with mini-mags) it would jam every few rounds....

LJ so did you shoot yours?
