I was down at Reliable Gun a week ago looking through all the used rifles as usual and bought an all original numbers matching ( electro pencil ) Lee Enfield No4 Mk 1. I think I paid quite a bit for it at 450$ + tax but for my first Enfield I couldn't resist it. Usual wear and scratches on the end of the barell/sight, action and bolt but the wood is in excellent condition and the numbers in the wood match the numbers on the bolt, action and barell. This is my first true Milsurp gun. Exact ID numbers on the rifle are No4 Mk 1/3 (F) FTR, Made in England and Marked US Property. Any additional info that anyone can provide me with would be great. I'm definitely hooked on Enfields and want to learn as much as I can about them. I have included a picture below.

Also here is a pic of my other 303's. Top to bottom my Globe .303 with 1.5x weaver scope and weaver mount, Parker Hale .303 and my Original No4 Mk1.
I am missing the Mag for my Globe so if anyone has one or knows of one for sale I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for looking

It is a US Savage made No.4 Mk1* that was rebuilt at the Fazerkely (I thinks thats the spelling) royal ordinace factory to No.4 Mk2 Standards and was re-designated No.4 Mk1/3. Not a bad looking rifle.

mmm toes I like toes.........nice guns too, I guess.

Your band newy is sure nice looking I'll give ya my old p.o.s sporter for it.;)

how exactly do you find out all that history without even ever handling the rifle:confused: I dont doubt that your correct though.

I do alot of reading into this things. OK, I can tell its a US Savage made No.4 Mk1* by the fact its marked "US PROPERTY", they manufactured No,4 Mk1* rifles for the brits under the lend lease program. The FTR stands for "Factory thorough repair" and the "(F) is the fazerkaly factory mark. No.4 Mk1* rifles that were rebuild to Mk2 standard were re-designated No.4 Mk 1/3. If anyone does see anything wrong, I would love to learn more about these rifles, I love the Lee Enfield, (as you can tell by my name:D)

You're correct, your spelling just needs work!:D

BTW Mildcustom2, you ended up with a better trigger arrangement when they converted it.

Is it normal for the serial number of the gun to be electro pencil etched on the Action, bolt and stamped on the barell, steel band above the trigger and wood?
Thanx for all the great info and keep it coming please.

Sean

I was told that when they FTR rifles, they sometimes take the good bits from different rifles and make one good one. They would peen out the original stamped serials and "force match" the parts by eloctro penciling other parts to match the receiver number. But I was told that although it is not "original" it still maintains its historic value. But If you like it, Who cares what it is.

"Force match" is a term that makes no sense at all. In a British rifle, the electro penciled numbers are normally very neatly done, I believe they used some form of stencil. On your rifle, the serial should be neatly electro-pencilled on the left receiver flat, the rear flat of the bolt handle, and the bottom of the mag. It will be stamped in the bottom of the forend. The original Savage serial # will be STAMPED in the left side of the butt socket. These FTR'd Savage and Longbranch rifles usually were assigned a new Brit serial at the time of the FTR. Bolts were usually Fazakerly or M47C BSA replacements, numbered to match the rifle.

I took it out shooting a week ago and it was really quite nice, didn't seem to have the same amount of recoil as my sportorized models due to the increased weight. I was using Winchester Super X 180 grain Power Points. No feeding or extraction problems at all. I was really impressed at its accuracy at 100 yds. Anyone think it wasnt worth 450$ plus tax. Seems a bit much to me but worth it for my first Enfield.
