I am Cree. I grew up for the better part of my life on an Indian reservation in Northern Manitoba Canada. I DO find savage's logo offensive, and I choose not to purchase any of their products because of that. Am I being overly sensitive? Maybe, but would you buy from a company called "Cracker Arms"? (How long would THAT company be around?)

What's worse? The fact Savage arms uses this logo, or the fact that it's seen as "ok" by most?

Regardless of 22-250 or .204, the savages have a very good action and doing a barrel swap can be done by you, at home. You could even make it into a switch barrel, it is so easy.

So burn that barrel with no worries...in fact, think of it as an opportunity to built a..6mmBR, 6mm AI, 6mm-284 ? Even converting it to a .204 is possible by replacing the bolt head and barrel.

Hmmm....I think I need to buy a savage.....

I am confused about which model you have. I cannot find a reference to a 12BTVS. Did you mean the 12BVSS? If so, you have a fine rifle. Don't skimp on the glass.

Sharptail

X3 with Sharptail concerning the glass. The .22-250 is a great choice and that's what my daughter & son in law each got in the Savage 112BVSS. I was impressed with the accuracy they were getting so I ended up getting the same model, but in .25-06 as I already have a .22-250. Again, reguarding the glass, go for quality, it'll pay off. On the .25-06 I mounted a Leupold VX-III, 6.5-20 with Varmint Hunter's Reticle. That combination with my second batch of reloads using 117gr Sierra B.T.'s I have a three shot group of 0.486", shot @ 185yds.

I remember ranting online YEARS ago on the firing line about not buying a SAVAGE rifle because of the native head logo and being native myself. Then they released a 20" heavy barreled 308. I'm such a sell out.

Can I be the next mascott?!?:dancingbanana:
You're no sell out Arthur Savage founded the company and through a deal with a chief Lame Bear got to use the Indian Head logo. Check savagearms.com and look at company history on the bottom left.

greeeeaaaaatttt. looks like i made the wrong choice........ how long would the barrel last in my 22-250...........am new to guns so i am just asking. should i take it back and get the .204? i hate being a rookie.

Have some greeeeaaaaatttt news for you! Just load your 22-250 down about 150 fps and it will still be going strong after 5000 rounds, maybe even 10,000.

Bevan King put more than 12,000 rounds through a Parker-Hale 243, before the barrel went south, by doing just that!

Actually, he shot it for 9000 rounds, then gave it to his brother-in-law, who used it for another 3000! :runaway:

Well great... I had my head up my ass as well. Thanks! :D

I recently got the same rifle (12BVSS) in 22/250. Bought a box of the cheapest ammo fer sighting in and brass, first 3 shots one ragged hole at 100.
Think thats good enough for yotes!

What loads you all use?

Yeah, Savage impressed me when I bought a cheepo 30/06 package deal they were offering. Mod 111, 3x9, bases, rings, even sling for under $600. The thing shot cloverleafs! (with tuned handloads)
When it was time for a new varmint gun there was no question what make I would get....

Shot my 243 for over 30 years before I had it rebarrelled. You will sell the 22-250 before you wear the barrel out. I was going to try a 204 but read that some people using them found the 204 a bit light for coyotes. I think you made the right choice. Both will bring down a coyote hit in the right place, I have had lots of them keep going even hit with 243 and bigger.
Funny you say that. I shoot a 22-250 for coyotes. I have shot them with a 270 win, 303 british and a 50 cal muzzle loader while deer hunting. All the big guns seem to blow a huge hole in them and they run a great distance (200-300 yards). When I shot my first coyote with the 22-250, I thought he ran. When I walked over to look for a blood trail, there it was! My question here is, Do the heavier bullets just plow through with no expansion?

Titleist:

I have a suggestion for you. Buy the same gun in a 204 and do a life expectantcy test for us here at CGN!!! Keep us posted.
P.S. I love my 22-250 for YOODLE DOGS!!!!!

It depends on the bullet, Yoodle. If you have a Failsafe up the spout, could happen, but a ballistic tip or SST will open up in a coyote. The 50 cal I couldn't tell ya, never shot one. Not to doubt you, but I've shot tons of dogs with said or simular BG cartridges and when I hit them right they never go more than 50yds. 200-300yds is a long way for anything but a gut shot. The 22-250's high velocity and the light bullet's quick expansion (and fragmentation) probably has a lot to do with the quick deaths. I prefer egg-beaters though, but then I'm sick.

rem338win

Both my brother and I have this happen with the 270 win . We are shooting Federal premium in 150 grain boat tail soft points. When we shoot deer with these bullets, they enter one side but usually don't exit the other. When you open them up, it looks like they were shot buy a shot gun on the exit side of the inside of the ribs. When we shoot coyotes you can see clear threw them when you hold them up to the light. A hole you could almost fit your hand in. When I shot one with my 303, same thing except he only went 40 - 50 yards (broken front leg). When I walked over to it, (100 yards) it was still alive and you could see a fist size hole in the ribs. The one with the 50 cal just kept spinning in circles as long as it takes to reload a black powder. The one with the 22-250 (using 55 grain winchester supreme ballistic silvertips) fell over dead .

Coyote Gun

I shot 2 dogs out of a group of 3 that me and a buddy called in last weekend With my 204! First dog was at 75 yards took it right in the rib's and fell over dead in his track's, His buddy was hauling ass dead staright away from me , so I gave him a texas heart shot at maybe 150 yards and he piled up but needed a follow up shot! Third Guy was really pouring in on buy then so didn't bother!!
But the first dog didn't even look like he had been shot! Little hole going in and nothing out Hardly any blood. Second dog even with 2 shot's was also in great shape! Which for us is important for a better price at the fur buyer!

All my hunting buddy's shoot 22-250's and bugged the hell out of me for getting a 204 but now the comparison in damage is not even close! Excellent coyote caliber!!!!
