Bought my new scope. But I'm dissapointed.

no kidding. but optically i would say more like 4200 - ziess - VXIII - monarch. but it depends what you want to get out of it. i hunt with a guy with a VX1 and I can't shoot any better than him with my 4200, i can see better in low light but not shoot better. i guess maybe, just maybe that one time in my hunting career the 96% light transmission will help me. But glass/brightness/clarity are different comparisons then durability and warranty and it seems the leupold guys always talk about the warranty which on a hunting rifle is probably a good arguement.
but comparing a VX-1 to a zeiss or 4200 is like a low end savage to a kimber custom.

Bottom line is that no one will laugh you off the range with a Leupold:D
 
Just out of curiosity I ran a question through Leupolds FAQ's, and didn't find anything on scopes, but found this for their bino's:

Doesn't say anything about outsourcing. And if they grind their own bino lenses...
 
If you love leupolds, just buy it, Who really cares where its made? I don't. They have a Canadian warranty site, plus you can always sell it on this exchange. I love my Nightforce, it says made in USA, however the glass is from Japan. I don't care. USO doesn't disclose where they get their glass from, probably would piss off some guys especially if you dropped 2-3 grand and find out the glass is from the orient, I guess. Now for the creme of the creme, hensoldt and S&B. They disclosure where the glass is from. If I had 4 grand to spend They would be my choice, however on my beer drinking salary the Nightforce is good enough for me.
 
Most of the Leuppy line up has a lot of stuff from overseas production. Their wind river line up even says so. The scopes have enough domestic content to be considered Made in the USA (gotta love content rules).

ALL of their glass is sourced overseas. Has been for decades. Much of their scope bodies are as well. Why not. Very well made for dirt cheap.

Nightforce is also made in Japan. Same house that makes the Elite 4200's. Have been for several years now. Orig they were made by HAKKO which is now defunct.

Google Optics one or Japan Optics.

Almost all of the Nikon stuff is made in their plants in the Phillipines or China.

Remember that all of these overseas shops are built with the most modern of equipment. Rifle scopes is so far down their production agenda that they have bigger fish to fry.

Think Cameras, binos, spotting scopes, lab equipment, and the biggest market of all - eyewear.

We just enjoy all this tech that has spun off these other industries.

I would say that some of the best scope tubes are now manf in China. Their robotics is the best in the world and access to specialty alloys is a no brainer now.

China is creating an enormous highly skilled work force. They have done what North America did in the 30's/40's till the 80's.

The Japanese still control the best coatings in the world and some big name Euro companies source their glass in Asia too.

Leupold makes no lenses for ANY scope.

Very few companies make their own lenses anymore. Little point as the coating tech requires extremely expensive equipment. May as well go to the experts.
