Bought my son his first gun... CZ

AWOL, have you ever considered scoping it first, and then taking it off? That way you can eliminate the chore of lining up the irons while he learns all the other fundamentals of shooting and then just work on the fundamentals of the irons when it comes time? It may very well be a quicker and faster way to learn to master the gun, as oposed to trying to teach everything at once.

Seen it done with a few youngsters and works like a dam, but then again what works for one does not work for everyone.

Regarding the youth model that some referred to. I highly recommend anyone buy one, even though they are small they are very easy for large folks to shoot accurately too and the fun factor never wears off. Were I a farmer it would be my truck gun instead of a full size, eaqually as accurate as the longer barrels, not sure it gives up much if any in bullet speed, and much easier to handle in confined spaces. My sons will never get sold.

Great choice, great dad, have fun shooting together, great way to spend time together.

I actually did end up putting the scope on. Mostly because my club range only has the heated indoor benches on a 100 yd range. Without the scope, 100 yds is futile. He will shoot all winter with the scope and then in the spring, I will take it off. As far as the youth models, he was right at the end of the road for that. We sized up one and it fit just right but he is just beginning his growth curve and will grow into the CZ by summer. Thanks for the recommendations.

:)

Excellent choice.

I have the 452 heavy barrel varmint and love it. I can almost make 1" groups at 100 yards with my leopold scope. This is on a calm day and taking at least an hour to go through 50 rounds. I'm thinking of adding the lux to my collection so I can practice more with irons.

My girlfriend's parent's run a biathlon club and she makes fun of me for using a scope. They can hit a golf ball at 50m with irons prone and a grapefruit at 50m standing with intense breathing and heart beat. This is where consistency in repeating the physical shooting position comes in since you can't see the target as well through irons. Shooting with irons IS part of the fundamentals of shooting and should be learned with all the other shooting skills. I tried to convince a friend once that standard transmission was part of learning to drive. She went for the automatic.

On that note, do whatever works. Make it fun. Tape a penny into an old CD and see if he can hit the penny out. Individual coffee creamers are are a blast (no pun intended) to set up on a fence and watch them explode.

You made an excellent choice. Make sure you don't store it in the case and it will last a lifetime.

Like you said - pass the torch! Great gift! I have a Cooey .22 that my 6yr old loves to shoot (under VERY close supervision, since he doesn't have the muscles to fight the spring on the bolt :)

The trigger kit from is an excellent and inexpensive way to take a good rifle to an outstanding one.

CZ "Lux"

AWOL,
I have done exactly the same as you a few years ago, bought my boy his first .22 when he was 13yrs old a CZ "lux". He practiced every Sunday at the indoor range (20yrd). We went to a precision shoot competition this summer using a 6.5 BR,shooting distance was 300 & 500yrds, he won 3rd overall highest score in his category. He is now 16 years old. I would recommend the "Lux" anytime!

+1... The first 500 shots or so with a new CZ are often fantastic, but you'll start to notice some trigger creep early on. This kit will fix it right up - and it comes with a selection of trigger weights for target shooting.
