Bought the dream rifle, or bought the farm, today.

Are those scope bases on the barrel behind the sights?

Pre-1936 presumably from the Royal Warrant, so late 20s or early 30s from that and the style?

Great vid! Any idea if the long version is around? Looks like a really cool place to work, I think I'd be pretty much in hog heaven there. Too bad it's where it is. Lousy place to live!

I walked past there in September. On a Sunday, sadly. Would rather have a shop tour than fondle the shiny stuff out front, in any case...

Great acquisition Ardent! That kind of money does not get you far on a Dealer's lot when shopping for new trucks, and it won't depreciate when you open the case, like a truck will when you drive it off the lot.

Hope your vanishing Outfitter shows up, or at least you can ake good on the money and book with someone else... Best of luck!

Cheers

Hey Angus, who is the absent rhino outfitter? Having made 7 or 8 trips to southern Africa I have met and know many people in the hunting industry there. I may be able to assist you in locating him, through some of my contacts, one of whom is or was the president of PHASA.

That's my biggest concern regarding booking my first hunt, how to weed out a snake in a foreign country. I hope you get that sorted Angus

That video was very interesting indeed. All of the work shown was impressive, but to me the wood working was especially so. I had to avert my gaze when that fellow hit such a beautiful chunk of lumber with a hacksaw. And when he was using a chisel to level the grip with the sideplate - well I had a vision of me doing that, and the vision included an instant removal of 1/4" too much wood!

Fascinating thread. Congratulations on finding just what you were looking for - no better feeling.
Loved the H&H gun-making video. Coming from a machinist/fitter background in my early career it brought back many memories.
One stand out was the use of soot to check fit. Never knew of that technique before.

been there -- done that ... and usually leaving a small imperceptible split that continues obliquely through the balance of the wood

Is there some way to clamp a red dot to it? Would really make it fast. And there is probably room under the buttpad for some spare batteries for extended safaris too.

VERY sharp chisel and stroke with the "rising" grain... otherwise your fears would be realized.

Gotta be a way to fit a quad rail forend on there, eh? Tack welds?

(that should cause a few involuntary cringes! :) )

Though, on a more serious note, you ain't gonna find the rings for that, at the local gun shop, methinks!

Sweet. So others possess this skill too. I thought I was "special".

You are one lucky man!
You've done this before. :) She's actually extremely supportive and I'm very lucky. More than anything she seems to appreciate the idea of my collection shrinking to a handful of out of the way items rather than taking over a room. I just have to keep her convinced this is the path to that.

Been on a slash and burn already anyhow returning to Africa again, this is a side step to be sure, but will prove a great companion over there no doubt.

Ardent, I like your line of thought, regarding trimming the numbers and upgrading to a few nice guns. Been working on that thought line for myself, just don't have the budget to do what you are doing.
At this point I have acquired the one SxS rifle , and two SXS shotguns I like. Not sure that I'll bother with a bigbore SXS, no real use for it, but. I'd still like to have one. I will keep a few singleshots, but, may get rid of a few falling blocks and go to 1 or 2 break actions, just because I like the way they carry better than the falling blocks.
Got the SXS rifle blooded this year, nothing else in the guns I have owned, has been quite as challenging or interesting or rewarding as working with it. It will get out some more yet, it's just too much fun to not take it out, over the others.

You definitely did well on that H&H. It is a sweet piece of workmanship. Methinks you will definitely enjoy that.
Sorry to hear about the rhino hunt issue, I believe I may have seen some info on that story, sounds like any refunds on that deal are probably gone out the window.
One part of life is great, one sucks, it is what is is, carry on.

You might as well gaudy up the H & H real good and install white line spacers. That would be totally criminal to put a red dot on a H&H.
