Bout of anxiety (disclosed during renewal). How screwed am I?

Like it says on the tin. I live in an urban area where there isn't a lot of overt firearms awareness. Last fall had a bout of anxiety which I went to the doctor for. Got a course of sleeping aids. Renewing my license shortly afterwards, I disclosed same. Now must get my doctor to sign a medical form within 60 days or my license is shut down.

Not particularly optimistic about this. What incentive is there for a doctor, who doesn't know me personally, sign this? Does this usually mark the end of one's license?

This happened to a friend of mine. I really wouldn’t worry too much about it. He had some anxiety medication & had to get a similar letter (possibly exactly the same one) from the dr who prescribed him the medication. Dr asked a few questions…then signed it. Try not to worry. Good luck!

bro are you worrying about anxiety again?

The incentive is they are a care provider and are supposed to tell the truth and whats best for their patient?

no - many have had PAL's renewed who declared depression/anxiety issues.

Just take the form to your doctor and let him know you're feeling fine, he’ll probably sign it without a problem. Everyone has tough days now and then, but as long as you're not dealing with anything serious like suicidal thoughts, it should be an easy thing to sort out. No stress.

WTF!!!

Yup. I've yet to find a health care professional, psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist that ever-had issue with me being a gun owner.

I've seen many, and I don't hide the fact I have MH issues.
That’s actually really encouraging to hear, thanks for sharing. I’m sure this will help a lot of people feel less alone or judged.

You'll be fine in my experience. If treatment is working or you're stable, there isn't much else for them to report in the letter.

Does the election factor in? I know it is having an effect on myself. Most likely many others. I don't trust the polls but...

Done that for years, once I wasn't afraid of my issues/problems I got better. Then realized I was worrying about nothing and not a death sentence. It's all how you talk to them. I use shooting as therapy, many will compare it to meditation. Many doctors will see the joy it brings. They can see it in your face or voice.

Talk to the doctor as a normal person and explain. I'm going on umm since 2008, as a gun owner with anxiety, depression and PTSD. Still being treated, last few years been pretty bad for me ( death of a dog, cancer, financial issues) But like alot of people are in the same boat. Esp with the Liberals attack on gun owners and COL.

Probably does help that I have some provincal shooting medals.

You should be fine, don't worry about it.
Just explain the doctor that as you disclosed the past anxiety, you need a doctors note to clear you using the medical form as a formality for renewal to make sure you're a normal person and not a harm to anyone else or yourself. Any understanding doctor would clear you unless it was a severe problem. What's in it for them? Their oath to help humanity and care for their patients.

I think you're thinking about it too much, I'm sure lots of other people have been in your situation and it turned out just fine for them, so will it for you

I would think that a mental-healthcare-provider would see the benefit in any kind of therapeutic activity...like shooting...in promoting relaxation and fighting stress?

We see the term "autism spectrum" nowadays, indicating a broad range of degrees of severity of that diagnosis. Is depression/anxiety also referred to as spectrum? I would think that, realistically, everyone would be somewhere on such a spectrum, at least at times.

Honestly, biggest issue is if your practitioner is an ANTI. You can use the category of firearms ownership in so many different ways to benefit you through so many common and normal mental issues. These issues can be temporary and due to a significant quantity of factors, that's why they want the form signed. Thanks to the NS shooter this is got to happen 100% of the time.

Once they see you're not an angry or violent person you're fine. Main thing is to react logically not emotionally to what you can by preparing information for yourself to use. This will help alleviate anxiety concerns from their side in itself.

Benefits for your life:

  • By being involved with firearms you are creating rituals for cleaning and large lists of small tasks to perform towards a larger goal. Helps focus on the now versus the unknown.
  • Providing this structure will benefit in creating more predictability by adding goals and tasks. Focusing on external factors that influence the action itself like temperature, wind and ammo choices versus focusing inward.
  • Trigger discipline and breathing and using physical posture can be physically beneficial towards people relieving the physical side of anxiety. Shooting in the great outdoors is a differing experience as well and feels more natural. The body will benefit from that as well.
  • You may be able to participate in a community if you know local shooters and this can help with additional structure and discipline.
  • Setting purchase goals can be a way to create a long term system of goals to work towards, with parts and accessories and other choices to make
