Bow hunting license?

Yup we are required to take a course and pay additional $$ for a bow tag but both are par for the course here.

Overly regulated and taxed.

I do agree there should be a course for bow though. Ours started at 7 am and we were slinging arrows at a target by 7:20am:eek:

There should be a shooting requirement for the firearms course too but what would the lawyers say!

You can keep your attitude all the way east, in the overlytaxed maritimes, cranky pants.
The rest of this country is doing just fine without it.

In Alberta you have to purchase an extra 'stamp' or 'permit' if you are going to bowhunt. It was a concession made several decades ago to appease the the traditionalists who felt that a bow was either ineffective or a 'poachers' weapon. The funds were for extra enforcement or whatever (general coffers more likely....we don't have to qualify or take a safety course.

There was an International Bowhunters Course which you could take (voluntarily) that IMHO could be mandatory for new bow hunters. It focused on ethical shots, blood trailing, and game habits when hit. Some time was also spent on tree stand safety and equipment.

When my daughter took her hunting course the instructor said the OFAH (Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters) was making a push for this requirement not the Ministry of Natural resorces. I asked him if he included archery in the regular hunting course and he said they do. They go over the poundage, broadhead size draw length........I then said that this is no more than a money grab. The conversation did not end plesantly as he attempted to defend it. I think the OFAH which started as a group of like minded sportsmen and women has now turned into a money making org. I believe they saw the income made from the turkey classes and figure this is a way to make more money. The turkey course did pay for the turkey repopulation and I don't begrudge them for that. The archery class is a money grab pure and simple. If they are sucessful in introducing this my membership is done as will be any attendance of any of their functions. This is not a government initiative, it's the OFAH. Call them and tell them to knock it off.
