I was once told there is no such thing as a stupid question, so here goes; do I need a PAL to purchase a compound bow? How about a cross bow? Also, do I need a PAL to hunt with either of these bows? I am in Ontario. Thanks in advance.
 
No, you do not require a firearms licence (PAL) to purchase either a compound or crossbow. You would require a hunter safetly course to get your Ontario Outdoors card and the appropriate game tags in order to hunt with it.
 
You do not need a PAL to buy or sell a crossbow. The goverment had them on the list but the fight to get compliance was so great for just the long guns that they gave up on crossbows. They were so sure that everyone would just register that they printed crossbows on the PAL information systems.

I believe we have the CSSA to thank for their work to get crossbows off the list.

Now the issue is that most of the hunter courses out there are what they call one shots. Meaning you must take a firearms course and hunter safety at the same time. Not mandated by law for bowhunters to take firearms training and there are BowHunter education programs out there that fit the required knowledge and are much more indepth on bowhunter training.

The ministry in Ontario has a licence system for bowhunters that allows for archery only hunters.

"...you only need pal for 500fps and over..." That's for air guns only. No PAL required for any bow. If you're thinking of bow hunting this year, you'd best get a move on. Shooting a bow, other than a cross bow, isn't like a rifle. Shooting a bow, even a compound, uses muscles you use for nothing else and you need upper body tone. You must learn how to shoot as well.
Go to a bow shop, not a shop that sells bows.
They're not exactly inexpensive. Compounds can run close to a grand with taxes. You don't have to spend anywhere near that much for a good bow. Think several hundred though. Plus the arrows, that have to match the draw weight, run around $10 to $15 each with no head. Adds up, but your deer season will be much longer. No fuss about hunting on Sunday either.
