A friend just loaned me all the gear I need for my first stab at bowfishing. Any tips or tricks?

I bought a old Hobbycat that was no longer used as a sail boat and put a plywood deck on it and a trolling motor. It works great you can steer it with your feet and have both hands on the bow ready to shoot as you troll the shallows for them. Not really any tricks to it the bardes part is getting use to shooting low and how low to shoot depends on how deep the water is. It is hard at first to hit them and get use to the refraction but once you get the hang of it it is great fun.

Ya probably around 4 " per foot sound about right. I just remember missing most of the time when I first started out . Then one I got the first one I was hooked .

I would have thought it to be more than 4 inches but never really gave it much thought. Like Heli said, once you get the hang of it, it becomes natural and you'll be hitting them almost every shot. For the most fun, shoot them just in front of the tail....

I was thinking about trying this out this year. Are carp the only fish you can shoot at, and where do you go to avoid "no discharge" laws around the Halton area? I only have my compound bow for deer, I can detune it and drop the weight down.

Its all about how low to the water you are. The arrow really plains out when you are lower, like wearing chest waiters. When im wearing chest waiters, I aim about a good 20"-30" below. Typicaly only shoot at carp within 15' feet.

If you can get nice and high you dont need to compensate so low. When im on the seats in the pontoon boat, I'll aim about 8"- 12" below. I'll shoot to about 25'-30' when on the boat.

Just go out and keep shooting. You'll most likely miss the first 5 or 6, but after a few you will figure it out. Carp fishing is a ton of fun.

Enjoy!

Do you have a boat, or will you be wading/shooting from shore? Season here in Ontario is open till July 31 so you still have time to get on it. I was out this week and the carp were still spawning.

Bowfin, carp, and white sucker... depending on which zone you are in. Seasons vary by zone as well. Usually they are done end of May or end of July.

season for carp is until July 31st in Zone 16. Don't see any other fish listed in pg 11 non -angling methods for bow this time of year.

Good luck with discharge laws. It's hard enough figuring out the maze of municipal, regional, provincial and federal laws locally.

I'll probably be shooting out of a canoe, I imagine anyway.
